The boss Seth in Hollow Knight: Silksong was the creation of a fan who passed away before the long-awaited sequel could be released. The incredibly successful indie game Hollow Knight came out in 2017, and though a follow-up was revealed to be in development in 2019, it would be a long six-year wait before Hollow Knight: Silksong would launch.
When Silksong finally released on September 4, 2025, it was a record-breaking day. Within hours of the game becoming available for download, people began reporting technical difficulties on Steam and the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch online stores. Silksong debuted to massive player numbers and even peripherally caused its predecessor Hollow Knight to reach a new all-time high player count on Steam. That didn’t mean everything was roses, though, with many people hitting a wall with even the game’s tough mini bosses.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Mod Removes One of the Biggest Fan Annoyances
A Hollow Knight: Silksong mod manages to address one of the biggest fan complaints about the game just one day following its release.
One Hollow Knight: Silksong Boss Has a Surprising Origin
For some players, one Hollow Knight: Silksong boss has stood out for another reason, however. Seth, a Shrine Guardian, was actually created in 2019 by fan Seth Goldman, who went by big_boi878 on Reddit. Diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, Seth’s wish was to meet with Hollow Knight developer Team Cherry, who said that he could design a character for the upcoming game. The fan provided a drawing and, fittingly, named the NPC Seth. Though promised a code so he could play Silksong on day one, Seth passed away shortly after creating the character and instead received a special mention in the game’s end credits.
In Hollow Knight: Silksong, Seth can be found in a secret area of the Grand Gate. He resembles an ant, wielding a pin as a weapon and carrying a circular shield, intended to be a coin by his creator, which he uses both for defense and to send spinning at Hornet during the fight. After defeating him, Seth can be found in Silksong’s Shellwood.
Despite its whimsical aesthetic, many players are finding Hollow Knight: Silksong even more difficult than the first game. Not only were some fan complaints not addressed in the sequel, but some things that have been changed, when combined, result in a tougher time for players. Boss runs are longer and more challenging, which isn’t helped by the fact that enemies hit harder than before and the healing mechanic has been altered as well. Some players are even finding platforming with Hornet to be more difficult.
Thankfully for those having a rough time, it didn’t take long before people were creating mods for Hollow Knight: Silksong to make things a little easier. One mod causes Hornet to respawn on the current screen rather than at a bench, while another decreases the amount of damage that enemies inflict. Conversely, there’s a mod to increase Hornet’s damage. While some might feel that modding waters down the Hollow Knight experience as intended by Team Cherry, some players just want to experience the game with a little less frustration. And, of course, there are also mods to make things tougher for those who like that sort of thing.
