  • The future of Hollow Knight post-Silksong is unclear, but Team Cherry's commitment to fulfilling promises may hint at exciting possibilities.

With anticipation for Hollow Knight: Silksong reaching a fever pitch, even the smallest details about development are eagerly devoured by fans. For instance, rumors are circulating that Silksong will be released soon because Team Cherry logged into their Kickstarter a few days ago. Some have speculated that the team is preparing to send backer copies, but it's equally likely it was just a meaningless login by the developers.

Even if Silksong isn't nearing completion yet, Team Cherry's past commitment to fulfilling promises is worth considering. Examining its track record might shed light on the future of the Hollow Knight series after Silksong. While Team Cherry is confirmed to be working on a new, unannounced game, this doesn't necessarily signal the end for Hollow Knight.

Hornet is a Fulfillment of Team Cherry's Past Promises

Hollow Knight Was Never Intended to Have a Sequel

For those newer to the game, it may not be common knowledge that Silksong originally began as a planned DLC for the 2017 game. Hornet, who players first encountered as a rival before becoming an ally in Hollow Knight, was slated to be a second playable character within the world of Hallownest. Notably, as the studio began working on this chapter, it quickly realized its scope was much larger than anticipated.

Of course, Hornet is an incredibly interesting character with mysterious origins. Given her fierce protectiveness of Hallownest and unique skillset, this shift from a DLC to a fresh title is understandable. Furthermore, boasting at least 165 new enemies and more than 100 checkpoints, Pharloom's map is reportedly much larger than Hollow Knight's. Given that Team Cherry is only a three-person team, the extensive production timeline is much more justifiable.

Silksong Could Be The Beginning of a New Trend for Team CherryHollow Knight Stretch Goals-1

Team Cherry's dedication to fulfilling promises made for the original Hollow Knight Kickstarter campaign is intriguing. This approach, evident in stretch goals like the White Palace and the Colosseum of Fools, might foreshadow a similar commitment to Silksong's potential future. Perhaps unimplemented concepts, like a potential third playable character, could be revisited as post-launch content.

On the Kickstarter page, the third character's shadow looks suspiciously like Zote, though the developers never confirmed whether this speculation was true or not. Interestingly, while Zote is a strong contender for a threequel or fresh DLC, a case could be made for a different character to take center stage. After all, Hollow Knight is home to a rich cast with several compelling narratives, like Quirrel, that have yet to be explored.

With a third playable character still on the table, Silksong may also benefit from ideas that were initially intended for the first game. The original Kickstarter campaign hinted at this possibility with a category labeled "more goals if [they] make it this far," suggesting additional features could be unlocked if funding milestones were surpassed. While any information has yet to be revealed, this could include free DLC updates similar to Hollow Knight such as:

  • New playable characters
  • New bosses
  • Harder versions of bosses
  • Alternate crafting abilities
  • New map locations
  • Alternate endings
  • Different player cosmetics

Regardless, Team Cherry has already undertaken the massive task of building upon Hollow Knight's foundations. Hornet's confirmation as a playable character in a highly anticipated title of her own is already more than noteworthy. As such, the developers would certainly be deserving of a well-earned break from the Hollow Knight universe after the game releases, despite any post-launch content plans.
