If fans thought the first Hollow Knight was filled with NPCs, enemies, and bosses, then they’re going to be shocked upon playing Hollow Knight: Silksong. Players will pass through several villages in the game, as well as areas populated by small groups or individual characters.
Silksong: Best Tips for Beginners
These eight best Silksong beginner tips will help both new players and veterans find their footing in Pharloom's haunted lands.
One of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s biggest changes is how questing works, as players are now able to keep track of side quests more easily. Most of these quests are tied to quirky NPCs, too. Let’s go over the best characters Hornet will meet on her journey in Hollow Knight: Silksong. As a character, Hornet is also better than she is in the first game, as she can talk this time around, but does that make her a standout among the NPCs, or is she just a good leading lady? There will be no story spoilers included here, so read on without worry.
Little Pilgrim
Part Of One Of The Game’s Best Scenes
- Location: Bone Bottom
The Little Pilgrim will be one of the first NPCs players meet in Bone Bottom. They have a generic name, like many NPCs in Silksong, but they will still touch the hearts of players, guaranteed.
Resting near the town’s bench, Hornet and the Little Pilgrim will exchange arguments over religion, which is a major theme in the game. While they disagree, the conversations remain civil. What is truly harrowing happens later in the game, and it will be a hard scene to forget.
Sherma
Dedicated To The Pilgrimage
- Location: The Marrow
Sherma is another pilgrim, although they are more dedicated to moving on with their quest. Players will meet them outside of Bone Bottom in The Marrow, and as long as players open a gate for Sherma, they will reappear several times throughout the game.
Sherma will be a messenger of peace in Far Fields, Bellhart, and the Blaster Steps, just to name a few locations. While Sherma may look like a daring samurai with their hat, they somehow avoid combat entirely, and yet are able to travel unharmed between biomes, which is quite curious.
Shakra
A Trusty Mapmaker
- Location: The Marrow
Shakra is the mapmaker in Hollow Knight: Silksong, and players will first encounter her in The Marrow. Up until The Citadel, players can find her in every biome waiting for them to buy her maps and map-based accessories.
Hollow Knight: Silksong - Things You Should Always Buy From Merchants
If you’re having trouble deciding what's important to buy from merchants in Hollow Knight: Silksong, here’s a quick guide.
While she is another shopkeeper, she plays a more active role in the story compared to other shopkeepers, and especially, more than Cornifer, the mapmaker from Hollow Knight. There’s even an opportunity to fight alongside Shakra in Hunter’s March, which is one of the coolest moments in the game.
The Bell Beast
A Good Girl
- Location: The Marrow
The Bell Beast is one of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s first big bosses, which is encountered in The Marrow. While intimidating at first, after Hornet knocks some sense into them, the Bell Beast will become an ally and the main source of fast travel in the game.
The Bell Beast cannot talk, but the little animations that play as she excitedly frolics in mounds of bells are adorable. No words are needed to make The Bell Beast a great character in the game.
Garmond And Zaza
A Daring Knight And His Steed
- Location: Greymoor
Garmond is a knight who is accompanied by a little bug, Zaza, that he rides like a horse. They can both be found resting in Greymoor, and while his age may make Garmond look like he isn’t up for a fight, he is more than ready to take on the many villainous bugs and bosses of the game.
Garmond can aid in the fight against Moorwing, for example, one of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s many tricky bosses. Garmond will ride in with Zaza to aid Hornet several times in the story, moments that are both surprising and badass upon every encounter.
Nuu
How About A Kiss?
- Location: Halfway Home (Greymoor)
Nuu is one of the strangest creatures in Silksong, and he looks more like an alien than a bug. Nuu can be found in the Halfway Home within Greymoor, and he’s tied to one of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s bigger quests called “Bugs of Pharloom.”
Things Silksong Does Better Than Hollow Knight
It’s not a huge improvement as both games are great, but there are some things Hollow Knight: Silksong does better.
Once players complete the quest by finding and fighting a hundred different enemies, Nuu will try to kiss Hornet. His reward is a hardy slap, which is sure to make players laugh. That may be a bit of a spoiler, but with those lips, who couldn’t see it coming?
Kratt
A Creepy Little Flea
- Location: Greymoor
Kratt is yet another character who players can meet in Greymoor; he is found near the entrance to Sinner’s Road. While Kratt is in danger upon finding him, something isn’t quite right about his character. Kratt promises a big reward after he returns to his flea troop.
If players manage to get the fleas to Greymoor, that’s where Kratt will be waiting with his hot tub trailer. If players pay to take a dip inside, Kratt’s creepy little mug will appear in the window, peeping with glee. While a bit of a creep, it’s fun to have a deviant character like Kratt in a game like Hollow Knight Silksong. He fills a role similar to "Creepy Good" characters in anime.
Caretaker
A Grumpy Caretaker Indeed
- Location: Songclave
Caretaker is one of the few new NPCs players will meet in The Citadel, within the small enclosure of Songclave. Caretaker was once the guardian of this area, but was glad to find some peace once things died down. That is, until Hornet rings the bell, prompting Caretaker to chastise her for drawing in pilgrims.
Caretaker’s irate attitude comes across clearly in their dialogue, making for some of the funniest moments in the game. While Caretaker is a bit too over the top in their anger, they do have a point in that The Citadel is not a peaceful sanctuary, but a dangerous pit of doom filled with cultists.
