During Nintendo's partner direct, Team Cherry revealed that the previously announced Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight would be launching for the console later that day on February 5, alongside a free upgrade path for owners. The Switch 2 is no stranger to upgraded ports, as Nintendo has already released a long line of upgraded content after the console launched early last year. However, Team Cherry's announcement of a special Switch 2 edition of Hollow Knight does a few things very differently from what Nintendo has done.
It's been a busy few months for the indie studio after finally launching Hollow Knight: Silksong after years of development and relative silence. The lengthy development time appears to have been worth the wait, as Silksong managed to claim a ton of industry awards, even though there were some players a bit turned off by the game's overall difficulty. Even with Silksong now out in the wild, Team Cherry continued working on other projects, including an upcoming expansion for Silksong and now the anticipated Switch 2 Edition of the original Hollow Knight.

Hollow Knight Switch 2 Edition Enhancements
In the Nintendo Partner Direct of February 5, 2026, Team Cherry revealed a new trailer for the Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight. While the original game has been available on the Nintendo Switch since 2018, followed by its successor Silksong last year, the indie studio has been working on a special Switch 2 Edition, which is now available after essentially shadow dropping the upgrade following the showcase. Better yet, the Switch 2 upgrade pack itself is completely free to download for players who already own Hollow Knight on the original Switch system.
For those curious, the Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight isn't just a simple port. Following other Switch 2 Enhanced games, Hollow Knight incorporates all of the updates and enhancements that Silksong had when it released. Players can look forward to a higher frame-rate and resolutions, with added graphical effects. It's worth noting that these upgrades aren't exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 console, as the other platforms are also getting these updates as well through updates.
Interestingly enough, releasing a free upgrade path is nothing new for Team Cherry, who also released 4 big expansions over the years following the launch of Hollow Knight. However, the decision is none-the-less refreshing for Switch 2 owners as Nintendo has typically followed a policy of charging money for players who want to download a Switch 2 Update Pack for games it is porting over from the original Switch. While some games are on the cheaper side, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons only charging $4.99 to upgrade, other games, like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Super Mario Party Jamboree TV are coming in at higher prices ranging from $9.99 to $19.99.
Either way, Hollow Knight fans have plenty of content to dig into, with the original game already featuring a ton of post-launch content on top of the base campaign. For those that have already traversed the lands of Pharloom in Silksong, the first expansion was revealed late in 2025. While not much is yet known, Team Cherry revealed the Sea of Sorrow expansion for Hollow Knight Silksong. The teaser trailer seemed to hint at a nautical theme, with crashing waves happening behind Hornet. As expected, the expansion will be free to download for SIlksong owners, though there isn't a specified release window or date quite yet. Fans will have to wait a bit longer, though considering how long it took for Silksong to launch, waiting shouldn't be too difficult at this point.
