In each new academic year, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry welcomes a whole host of new students. During their time in the castle they learn about potion-brewing, herbology, and defense against the dark arts, all in the hope of being better at wielding magic than they ever thought possible. With Hogwarts Legacy, Avalanche Software will look to replicate this experience for gamers everywhere with an adventure that stretches from the historic halls of Hogwarts itself to the unassuming alleyways of Hogsmeade. As is customary with new pupils, the sorting hat will assign players a house, but one of them is perhaps the most revered of all.
Each of the four has specific traits that are required of its students. Slytherin covets ambition and strong leadership whereas Ravenclaw is known for its wit, wisdom, and commitment to learning. The most famous wizard of all is neither of these, however, as Harry Potter found a home in the common room of Gryffindor, a house that is courageous and chivalrous. The latter is likely a result of the house's rich lineage spanning back generations. The 2022 release will hopefully capitalize on the stark differences between houses, but Gryffindor is clearly the most beloved among fans.
Godric Gryffindor's Godly Name
A house named after the brilliant wizard who founded it, Gryffindor will be one of the available options in Hogwarts Legacy. Like the other houses, Gryffindor was created by one of the four great witches and wizards of their age. Godric Gryffindor championed the aforementioned traits above all else. Upon founding the school with Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, it became clear that they all would select students according to their intangibles, and upon his death Gryffindor and the others enchanted his hat which would later become the sorting hat to assign future students a home.
The four lived in relative harmony, but the strong friendship between Gryffindor and Slytherin would begin to crack after the latter opposed to allowing Muggle-born students to enroll at Hogwarts. As such, Slytherin's evil reputation become known by fans everywhere. Godric Gryffindor's sword is featured prominently in the Harry Potter series, being a goblin-made blade that has the ability to destroy horcruxes. Gryffindor was a proficient conjurer of spells, so this paired with his heroism (though some Slytherin students would consider this 'pointless') made him one of the most iconic wizards in all of Harry Potter lore.
Notable Gryffindors and Their Modern Antics
Gryffindor continued to be the house that championed courage, and its students often showed this through the exploits in class, on the Quidditch field, and during extracurricular activities. While Harry may be 'The Boy Who Lived', he follows in a long line of valiant witches and wizards who bared the Gryffindor sigil on their chest. From the brilliant mind and unpredictable nature of Remus Lupin to the wisdom and omnipresence of Albus Dumbledore, Gryffindor houses some truly polarizing personalities that share a few essential traits in common. Those traits led Gryffindor to the House Cup during Potter's first year, a feat that was achieved due in large part to Hermoine's unparalleled intelligence and Ron Weasley's ability to play the perfect game of chess.
The Gryffindor house was greatly affected in 1981 by Peter Pettigrew's betrayal of both Harry and the Marauders. Lupin, Sirius Black, and James Potter were his friends, and by aligning himself with Lord Voldemort Pettigrew created a rift between them that was never resolved. This landed Sirius Black in Azkaban and ended the life of Lily and James Potter, ensuring Harry would grow up in the oppressive clutches of the Dursley family in Surrey, England. It would set in motion the events that would later occur, and would also serve as one of the few blemishes on the Gryffindor's otherwise impressively heroic resume.
When Harry's journey comes to an end, it's clear that Gryffindor is in safe hands. It's a house that, like its contemporaries Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin, has a rich history of immense heroism, unruly rule-breaking, and moral greyness. It's the home to witches and wizards of so many backgrounds and persuasions, and when Hogwarts Legacy releases sometime in 2022, players will have the chance to make a similar impact on the history of the Harry Potter license. Gryffindors are strong-minded and demonstrate high levels of courage, which will hopefully be needed when the game finally arrives.
