Summary
- Warner Bros. Games canceled Hogwarts Legacy DLC, according to a report.
- The sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is still actively being developed at Avalanche Software.
- Recent cost-cutting measures by Warner Bros. Games signal financial challenges in the gaming division.
Warner Bros. Games has reportedly scrapped plans for an unannounced Hogwarts Legacy expansion, which was expected to roll out later in 2025. Following multiple studios and other in-development projects, Hogwarts Legacy's rumored DLC is the latest to bear the brunt of the American publisher's financial struggles.
Post the mammoth success of the 2023 action-RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games grew increasingly interested in expanding the video game offerings under the Wizarding World franchise. However, its efforts towards that end were met with a lukewarm reception as Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions gradually spiraled into obscurity after its launch in September 2024. In the same year, the publishing giant also endured the ill-fated releases of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus. The repercussions seem to have spilled into the development of expected Hogwarts Legacy post-launch content, which is now understood to be no longer in the pipeline.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Has an Obvious Path It Can Take to Deepen Its Four Houses
Hogwarts Legacy 2 has loads of potential, but how it handles smaller world-building elements like Hogwarts house could be particularly pivotal.
Earlier in March 2025, the leadership at Warner Bros.-Discovery binned the Hogwarts Legacy DLC as part of "ongoing restructuring" at Avalanche Software, per a Bloomberg report. The publisher made the call after it felt that the game's expansion wasn't "substantial enough" to merit the "price being considered." Alongside this, the "Definitive Edition" of Hogwarts Legacy, which would have featured the base game bundled with the rumored DLC, was also scrapped. According to the source, the DLC was being developed in partnership with Rocksteady Studios and would have revived some of the cut content from the base game, including a storyline that revolved around one of its companions. Fortunately, the report also states that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in active development at Avalanche Software.
Warner Bros. Games Ditches Plans for Rumored Hogwarts Legacy DLC
The latest move by Warner Bros. Games further adds to some major ways it has been participating in cost-cutting in recent months. In February 2025, the veteran game publisher canceled the highly anticipated Wonder Woman title and also shuttered three different studios, including Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's creator, Monolith Productions. Prior to that, there were multiple reports of layoffs taking place at Rocksteady Studios in the aftermath of the disappointing performance of its live-service Suicide Squad game. The upheaval in the Warner Bros. Games division reached all the way up to the top, with the company also understood to be negotiating the exit of its president, David Haddad, for later in 2025.
Although the new report spells bad news for Hogwarts Legacy's post-launch additions, fans may still expect the sequel to avoid facing a similar fate. Warner Bros. Games has previously underscored the importance of the fantasy-themed IP in its future plans, and there is little to suggest that the planned Hogwarts Legacy sequel could be in doubt.
