Summary
- Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling video game of 2023, surpassing even the highest-rated games.
- Slytherin is the most popular House in the game, followed closely by Gryffindor and then Hufflepuff.
- Players may have been influenced by each House's prominence in the Harry Potter series and the unique quests and features associated with each House. Ravenclaw may have been less popular due to the lack of a proper companion quest line.
It's been nearly one year since the launch of open world Harry Potter action-RPG Hogwarts Legacy, and to celebrate, some updated stats have been shared for the game. Hogwarts Legacy was a massive success upon its release last year, earning positive reviews from critics and blowing away sales expectations.
Despite heavy competition from some of the highest-rated video games ever made, Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling video game of 2023. Hogwarts Legacy's sales were strong throughout the year, with the game getting boosts from its ports to PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Hogwarts Legacy's dizzying success means it's likely that Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Interactive will be making a sequel, but in the meantime, the team has reflected on the original by providing updated stats for the community.
Hogwarts Legacy Passes Another Massive Sales Milestone
Hogwarts Legacy continues to prove a success for Warner Bros. And Avalanche Software, blasting past another major sales milestone.
Perhaps the most interesting info is which Hogwarts House is the most-popular in Hogwarts Legacy. Avalanche Software revealed that Slytherin is the most popular House in the game, with 30% of players sorted into it. Gryffindor isn't far behind with an impressive 29%, while Hufflepuff is the Hogwarts House of choice for 24% of players. Ravenclaw, unfortunately, found itself in last place with 17%.
Hogwarts Legacy Most Popular Houses
- Slytherin - 30%
- Gryffindor - 29%
- Hufflepuff - 24%
- Ravenclaw - 17%
It's unclear why players chose each House in the game, though it was likely due to a number of factors. Slytherin and Gryffindor are the two most-prominent Houses in the Harry Potter books and movies, so it tracks that they would be the two most-popular in Hogwarts Legacy. Beyond that, players may have been persuaded by each House's unique Common Room. Each House also has a unique quest tied to it, so perhaps that played a role.
Hufflepuff lets players go to Azkaban, and so it's somewhat surprising that it didn't find itself in one of the top positions. However, it's likely that many Hogwarts Legacy players had no idea about the House-exclusive quests until they played the game themselves. Something that could explain Ravenclaw's lack of popularity could be the fact that there is no proper Ravenclaw companion in the game, whereas there are companions with their own quest lines found in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.
While House popularity may be the most interesting detail shared by Avalanche, fans may also be interested to learn that there were 740 million hours played, 3.05 billion Hogwarts Legacy fast-travels used, and 51 million hours spent flying on a broom. The two enemies that were killed by players the most were Dark Wizards, with 5.25 billion defeated in the game's first year, and spiders, with 5.30 billion defeated.
