Harry Potter fans have recently learned the team behind the anticipated, albeit controversial, development of the HBO live-action reboot will share a narrative connection to the storytelling in Avalanche Software’s Hogwarts Legacy sequel. Released in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy brought every witch and wizard’s role-playing fantasy to life, thanks to the action RPG’s immersive world jostling with familiar locations, spells, and creatures for players to experience for themselves, instead of through the silver screen or J.K. Rowling’s book series.

Warner Bros. Discovery previously announced HBO’s Harry Potter television series during a press event in 2023, and this project understandably divided fans. One-half of the community thought the original live-action film series could never be replaced and that the reboot series was happening far too soon. Others were simply happy to receive more IP content to soak up. However, a portion of fans are adamant Harry Potter needs an animated spin-off before a live-action reboot, which would be a more diverse way of exploring Rowling’s world without a straight live-action reboot, similar to Hogwarts Legacy’s feat.

During an interview with Variety, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad explained the games team was working on connecting the Hogwarts Legacy sequel to the HBO series. “The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with Hogwarts Legacy last year,” Haddad explained and teased that some of the major storytelling elements in the game’s sequel would play out in the live-action series. The scope of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is expected to be the same, but its interconnected storytelling with the HBO series could broaden its narrative and carry more weight with the possibility of canon events affecting the story in transmedia projects.

Since fans are already very familiar with Harry Potter’s core characters, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel could expand the protagonist’s place in the wizarding world, which is another beat that could be echoed in the live-action series. Ultimately, Haddad confirmed little distinction between generations when it comes down to being a true Harry Potter fan at heart, and the teams behind these magical projects are aiming to “build authentic experiences to delight them.”

Quidditch is the main component on every fan’s wish list for Hogwarts Legacy 2, since it left a giant, broomstick-shaped hole in the predecessor. Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions served as a band-aid to cover the fandom’s disappointment, but there are many ways the magical sport can be integrated into the sequel, and there’s a dead certainty it will be covered in HBO’s live-action reboot.
