Summary

  • TinyBuild has announced a Hello Neighbor movie is in development.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's writer Tyler MacIntyre is attached to pen the adaptation.
  • Uncertainty remains about whether the Hello Neighbor movie will be live-action or animated.

There’s been no shortage of video game adaptations coming out of Hollywood recently with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Fallout all releasing in 2024. That trend does not seem to be slowing down as the latest game lined up to get the movie treatment has been revealed to be Hello Neighbor.

Hello Neighbor comes from developer Dynamic Pixels and publisher tinyBuild. The game is in the stealth survival horror genre and features the player attempting to break into their neighbor's house to investigate strange occurrences in the basement. With each attempt, the game’s enemy AI gets smarter and sets traps along the paths the player may have previously used. The first Hello Neighbor game was released in 2017 and has since spawned a franchise, with Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek, Secret Neighbor, Hello Engineer, and Hello Neighbor 2 all released in the past seven years.

While the underneath formula has remained the same, the Hello Neighbor series has changed much since its inception.

Hello Neighbor Is Headed To the Big Screen

Now the Hello Neighbor universe will expand further with a movie adaptation. The news was announced on tinyBuild’s YouTube channel in a clip that showed a first-person perspective of a merry-go-round in a park with a Hello Neighbor mask sitting on top. The camera then looks down to reveal a script sitting on the merry-go-round with the title Hello Neighbor: The Movie. The script page also revealed that Tyler MacIntyre is writing the movie with Alex Nichiporchik, the CEO of tinyBuild, and Jonathan Carnage, the co-creator of the Hello Neighbor animated series, on board as producers. A director for the film adaptation was not included in the announcement.

MacIntyre is best known for writing the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie for Blumhouse, which went on to become a massive success at the box office and currently has a sequel in development. Five Nights at Freddy’s and Hello Neighbor share some similarities, with both being horror games that are suitable for younger players. MacIntyre’s work on FNAF makes him a great candidate to bring the Hello Neighbor franchise to the screen given he has experience in the genre. The movie is being produced by BoulderLight Pictures, which recently released Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour. The studio also worked on 2022’s Barbarian, a film that also shares some similarities with Hello Neighbor as both movies explore the unexpected secrets of a suburban basement.

Will Hello Neighbor Be An Animated Movie?

The Hello Neighbor movie is still in early development so few details have been announced. One major question still to be answered is whether the Hello Neighbor film will be a live-action adaptation, or stick to the animated realm like what the franchise has done with the Hello Neighbor: Welcome to Raven Brooks cartoon series. The animated series has done exceptionally well for tinyBuild, with the pilot episode gaining over 23 million views on YouTube since its release four years ago.

It also remains to be seen which of the Hello Neighbor games the movie will adapt. The first Hello Neighbor focused on the story of a boy named Nicky, who investigates the secrets of his neighbor, Mr Peterson. However, Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek revealed the origin story of Mr Peterson, so perhaps the movie will start chronologically, or find a way to interweave the story of multiple Hello Neighbor games.
