The upcoming Xbox launch of Helldivers 2 will support cross-play alongside PC and PS5 users, according to a statement from Microsoft made during the game's surprising reveal. Cross-play will be available between all three versions of Helldivers 2, though cross-progression between them remains unclear as of this writing.

On July 3, developer Arrowhead Game Studios, alongside Microsoft, surprised fans by confirming that Helldivers 2 would arrive on Xbox Series X/S starting Tuesday, August 26. The move to Xbox consoles will come over a year and a half since Helldivers 2 first launched on PS5 and Steam. While the game was marred by a controversial mandate that required users to have a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, Sony has since backtracked on this requirement. Since June 13, Helldivers 2 has been made available on Steam in several countries that had lost access to the game due to PSN not being available in those regions.

Helldivers 2 Finally Adds Highly Anticipated Item in New Update

Helldivers 2 releases a new update for the game, as well as launching a highly anticipated free cosmetic item the community has been waiting for.

Following a petition that called for Helldivers 2 to be ported to Xbox consoles, a feature from the PC and PS5 versions of the Sony-backed shooter will also be available to Microsoft's user base. As reported by Pure Xbox, the Xbox Series X/S version of Helldivers 2 will support cross-play with the PC and PS5 versions of the game, meaning players can join game sessions with their friends on their platform of choice. However, an active Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription is required to play Helldivers 2 on Microsoft's consoles. Although Helldivers 2 features cross-play between each available platform, there is currently no cross-progression system between the PC and PS5 versions. Ergo, it is unlikely that the Xbox version of Helldivers 2 will support cross-progression either.

Helldivers 2 Will Support Cross-Play Between Xbox, PC, and PS5

  • The Xbox port of Helldivers 2 will have cross-play with PC and PS5 at launch.
  • However, cross-progression between each Helldivers 2 version is still not supported.
  • Helldivers 2 will require an active Xbox Game Pass subscription, as it is an online-only title.
  • Preorders for Helldivers 2 on Xbox are now available on the Microsoft Store.

The Xbox Series X/S version of Helldivers 2 is currently available for digital pre-orders on the Microsoft Store, with both the Standard and Super Citizen Editions available for users to choose from. Following rounds of player feedback, Helldivers 2: Super Citizen Edition received a change that swapped out the Steeled Veterans Warbond with a Warbond Token that can be exchanged for any Premium Warbond of the player's choice. Warbonds include various weapons, armor sets, skins, and emotes for players to earn by progressing through each tier. Unlike battle passes seen in other games, unlocking a Warbond is a permanent thing, so Helldivers 2 players can progress through it at their own pace.

With Helldivers 2 still receiving support via patches that introduce new features and fix various bugs, Arrowhead's hit shooter shows no signs of slowing down. How many new Helldivers will join the fight for Super Earth via Xbox consoles remains to be seen.
