In a surprising move, Arrowhead Game Studios and PlayStation revealed this month that Helldivers 2, the popular co-op game that made its debut on PS5 and PC last year, will be making its way to Xbox Series X/S on August 26. As exciting as this news was, it was something that no one really anticipated. While there had been a lot of demand for an Xbox port of the game in the Helldivers community, many gamers didn't actually think that PlayStation would decide to listen to these requests. Helldivers 2 is the first-ever PlayStation-published game to be released on an Xbox console, and its multi-platform release seems to mark a notable change in strategy for PlayStation as a company.

On the same day that Helldivers 2 will be released for Xbox, Arrowhead Game Studios plans to add a new item to the game called a Warbond Token. As their name suggests, Warbond Tokens basically allow players to redeem one Warbond (Helldivers 2's version of a battle pass) of their choosing in the game's Acquisition Center. Since the Warbonds in Helldivers 2 never expire, players can get pretty much any of the ones they want at any time, regardless of when they were initially released. These Warbond Tokens seem like they're going to be a pretty big deal, but they could be even more significant for the game in the long run.

Helldivers 2 Makes Requested Update to Super Citizen Edition

Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios announces an upcoming update to the game's Super Citizen Edition based on fan feedback.

Warbond Tokens Are an Exciting New Addition to Helldivers 2

Warbond Tokens Are a New Item That's Exclusive to the Super Citizen Edition of Helldivers 2

The Warbond Token was originally announced by Arrowhead Game Studios on July 2, a day before the Xbox port of Helldivers 2 was revealed. At the time, Arrowhead stated in a post on the official PlayStation website that this new item would be included in the Super Citizen Edition of Helldivers 2, and that it wouldn't be obtainable anywhere else. Warbond Tokens, Arrowhead said, were being added to the game in order to prevent people from buying the same thing twice.

Warbond Tokens Prevent Players from Purchasing the Same Warbond Twice

For those who are out of the loop, the Super Citizen Edition of Helldivers 2 is the premium version of the game that's available on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox consoles. This edition costs $20 more than the base version of Helldivers 2, and it comes with a bunch of in-game goodies, such as a handful of cosmetics and an armor set. Perhaps the most significant piece of content included in the Super Citizen Edition, though, is the "Steeled Veterans" Premium Warbond. This is the first Warbond that was ever added to Helldivers 2, and it contains 5 weapons, 7 cosmetics, and 3 armor sets, along with a few other things.

Current owners of the base version of Helldivers 2 can upgrade to the game's Super Citizen Edition for a $20 fee on PS5 and PC. This upgrade pack, however, is not currently available on Xbox.

While the content included in the Super Citizen Edition is really solid on its own, it's worth noting that the "Steeled Veterans" Premium Warbond can be purchased directly through Helldivers 2's in-game shop for 1,000 Super Credits. Because of this, some owners of the Helldivers 2 Super Citizen Edition have accidentally bought the "Steeled Veterans" Warbond again and, thus, wasted their money on something they already own. The Warbond Tokens are meant to remedy this particular problem. Instead of getting the same Warbond every single time, PS5 and PC players who purchase the Helldivers 2 Super Citizen Edition on or after August 26 will now receive a Warbond Token instead, so that they can unlock any Warbond they want.

Arrowhead Could Make Warbond Tokens Unlockable in Other Ways in the Future

Arrowhead Game Studios has said that it currently has no plans to offer Warbond Tokens as a standalone product. This, however, doesn't rule out the possibility of the tokens becoming unlockable in other ways later on. Maybe, in the future, Arrowhead will distribute Warbond Tokens during rare events to individuals who complete certain challenges. This way, it could make the Warbond Tokens more useful to the average player, especially when other Warbonds are added to the game in the coming years. Players who want to unlock all the available items in Helldivers 2 without purchasing every Warbond outright, meanwhile, would also benefit from such a decision, so hopefully this happens at some point in time.
