The world of Helldivers 2 is full of numerous planets for gamers to liberate them from alien threats. Players will find themselves fighting and besting the Illuminate, Terminids, and Automatons in environments that can be considered dangerous, especially with all the hazards they tend to house. The diversity of the level design is a strength of the co-op title, as all the planets have certain qualities that provide them with their own identity. Unique as they are, the game has yet to touch on a particular planet type that consists of nearly nothing but helium and/or hydrogen.

In Helldivers 2, every mission involves traveling to a planet and completing objectives that help towards Super Earth's goal of galactic freedom. Though there are many different kinds that players are allowed to explore, the game has yet to introduce one that involves a gas giant. While it is understandable why this has not yet been explored, considering that it basically has no surface for anything to stay on, there are ways to make such a planet into a play-space. Arrowhead Game Studios may want to consider the possibility, as it presents opportunities that, if taken advantage of, could attract more people into playing Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 now has three enemy factions, but ongoing rumors and theories about a human rebel faction could be a strong fourth.

How To Incorporate a Gas Giant Planet as a Playable Area in Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 should consider going beyond traditional planets, and adding a gas giant as a part of the mission list could be the first step toward that. However, Arrowhead Game Studios will still need to incorporate such a locale into the game in a way that makes sense as a playable area, and one way to do that is if it includes a humongous floating city. This would be the ideal move for a planet with no surface, and a good way to explain the metropolis' existence is by going with the narrative of it using the gas as a form of fuel, while also studying the substance for Super Earth's future use. This would open up many opportunities for future updates, and the new environment can allow for things such as more destructible objects, a different hazard in the form of non-breathable gases, and edges where players can fall off the city and onto/through the planet.

The Benefits of Using a Gas Giant as a New Environment for Missions in Helldivers 2

Aside from introducing an urban environment even larger and potential more impressive than that of the Illuminate-infested planets, there are other benefits of having a gas giant in the game, such as:

  • Introducing an entirely new mission type and vehicle to accompany the planet, which sees players piloting a spacecraft that allows them to study the uses of the gas while evading or eliminating the only enemy with the technology to stop them, the Illuminate.
  • The gas giant can be used as a starting point for environments that have hazards that harm players throughout the entire duration of a mission, which could lead to interesting new items or mechanics being added that help players constantly ward off harm.
  • The planet can be introduced as a form of cover for a potential fourth faction in Helldivers 2, one that has used its gas to conceal its humongous ships stationed within its atmosphere, which can then become a home for missions wherein players board and destroy them.

New planets are always within the realms of expectations for Helldivers 2, meaning a gas giant has a chance of being added to the game in the future. A bold addition like this has the potential to do a lot of things for the game, and hopefully, Arrowhead Game Studios will recognize that potential in a future update.
