After a challenging major order, Helldivers 2 autocompletes it and rewards those who avoided finding ways to cheat. Arrowhead has been under some pressure as of late as Helldivers 2 players continue to air their grievances at the current state of the game. After a hot start earlier this year, Helldivers 2 has struggled with the game's balance, nerfing builds and weapons the community has found the fun in, resulting in review bomb campaigns on Steam and plenty more controversy in the months following.
Earlier this month, Helldivers 2 released the Escalation of Freedom update, a huge patch that added new content while fixing bugs and again attempting to balance various parts of the game. While some of the adjustments, namely to fire and flamethrower weapons, haven't been well received, players continue to log in and impact the game's overarching story. As a live-service title, Helldivers 2 is constantly giving players things to do through Major orders, and the latest one provided to be so challenging that there were some in the community who resorted to cheating to get the task done. However, Arrowhead has not only identified those involved, but used an in-universe reason to deny them rewards.
Helldivers 2 Director Reveals Future Plans After Controversial Escalation of Freedom Update
Helldivers 2's director addresses the community in a new statement and lays out future plans for the title following its last controversial update.
August 16 saw Arrowhead add a major order calling on players to extract huge amounts of Common and Rare samples in Helldivers 2. The order was met with plenty of pushback from players as many felt it was overly difficult in its requirements with a 4-day requirement, though the Major Order was ultimately finished after a few hours. Considering the massive numbers needed, its unclear exactly how the objectives were finished so quickly, though many assumed some level of cheating was involved.
Helldivers 2 Rewards Non-Cheating Players
Either way, it's clear that Arrowhead was well aware of cheating going on, as the studio essentially canceled the Major Order before its end and instead handed out the 50 Helldivers 2 Warbond Medals to those who didn't resort to gaming the system. However, just rewarding non-cheating players wasn't the end of it, as Arrowhead crafted a message using the game's fiction and humor to call out those who performed dishonorably. In a message from Super Earth, any Helldiver who submitted false samples have had their pet fish executed. While Super Earth labs continue to filter out false samples, scientific advances have helped significantly decrease the spread of Gloom.
While the end result of this Major Order had a humorous outcome, the current Helldivers 2 atmosphere remains tense with the community. With many still upset at the current state of the game, there is a large number of Helldivers 2 players actively helping the Automatons approach Super Earth. Many want to see what would happen if an enemy faction reached the home of the Helldivers, or if Arrowhead would allow that to happen and potentially disrupt the game's overall narrative. For now, Super Earth lives on, though if a good majority of players get their way, it may not stay that way much longer.
