The Harry Potter HBO TV Series Should Have Avoided This One Major Issue

Despite the recent star-studded cast announcement, many fans are reticent about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, due to this major concern.

Harry Potter Fans Have Often Been Frustrated With The Time Turner

One of the biggest plot holes throughout the Harry Potter series is that of the Time Turner. This is a magical device that appears like a necklace but actually allows people to travel back in time to a specific moment in time. Hermione Granger uses it throughout her third year at Hogwarts to ensure that she’s able to attend as many lessons as possible, with her schedule being hectic enough that it would be impossible without it. However, it’s never truly explained why Albus Dumbledore gives Hermione such a powerful piece of magic, even though it’s ultimately used to save multiple lives in the third act of the movie. It creates a plot hole because fans wonder why it isn’t used at other points in the story, such as to stop Lord Voldemort. It’s an issue that the Harry Potter movies simply skirted over, and that’s something that HBO needs to fix.

HBO’s Harry Potter Needs To Tweak The Time Travel Rules

Fans Wonder Why It’s Not Use More Often

HBO’s Harry Potter needs to try to provide some clearer rules regarding how time travel works in this universe. Wizards are only able to stay in the past for five hours at any time, which isn’t explained in the movies, and would likely help explain why people can’t go back and make drastic alterations. On top of that, JK Rowling has also claimed that wizards aren’t able to use the Time Turner to go back more than a few hours at a time, meaning it would be impossible for anyone to go back to the early moments of Tom Riddle’s life to try and stop him. Unless people have possession of a Time Turner and are able to return just hours after a major event occurs, it is essentially impossible to do so.

This is an explanation that must be provided in HBO’s Harry Potter, as it would instantly smooth over the majority of the plot holes surrounding this magical device. While it’s still unclear why Dumbledore would give this to Hermione outside of him having an inkling they would need it, this explanation would at least help explain time travel in Harry Potter. That’s what fans are looking to see in HBO’s version of the iconic story, and if that can be provided, it would instantly make Harry Potter a stronger show, as that problem would be resolved.

Harry Potter Should Show The Destruction Of The Time Turners

This Would Help Eliminate One Plot Hole

The Time Turner is ultimately used as a narrative device to save Sirius Black and prevent him from being sent back to Azkaban, while also freeing Buckbeak at the same time. However, other character deaths could have been prevented by going back in time and altering things ever so slightly, such as those of Professor Dumbledore or Dobby, which is why many fans wonder why that never happens. What a lot of Harry Potter fans aren’t aware of is the fact that all the Time Turners in the Ministry of Magic end up getting destroyed in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This takes place during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, but that isn’t showcased or talked about within the film of that novel. That’s something that HBO’s Harry Potter should look to change, because explaining that small detail would instantly stop people from being confused as to why it’s not used later on in the series.

While there might be a few Time Turners still available in the wider wizarding world, the entire Ministry stockpile is destroyed, meaning nothing new can be accessed by any of the characters. Showcasing that moment, or at least mentioning it, would eliminate a significant plot hole within the Harry Potter story, and that in itself would help to make HBO’s version even more compelling. HBO has the benefit of time in the sense that it can address any issues fans have with the story to ensure it is as streamlined as possible. The situation surrounding the Time Turner is one of those problems, and trying to explain it better would make HBO’s Harry Potter a more exciting story.
