HBO’s Harry Potter is underway with filming right now, with the television adaptation already being brought to life, and the show might feature a lot more of Lord Voldemort than people expect. While the iconic Harry Potter villain hasn’t been officially cast at this point, reports are pointing toward him being featured in the first season.

Harry Potter fans are well aware of Lord Voldemort’s story, look, and powers, but HBO seems keen to showcase him in more detail than the film series ever did. While there’s a risk factor in overexposing the character, the decision would be a beneficial one.

Leaks from HBO's Harry Potter set have hinted at the show being set around a specific time period.

The Villain Didn’t Appear In Full Form Until The Fourth Movie

HBO’s Harry Potter is already underway with filming for the first season, which will be based around Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and set details and certain leaks have already made their way online. The show is expected to remain faithful to the original JK Rowling novels, which means that the story itself is likely to unfold similarly to the movies. However, HBO is reportedly going to feature Lord Voldemort more than he was in the previous adaptation, and the character has apparently already been cast, according to Redanian Intelligence. HBO is opting to keep the actor a secret for now, likely due to all the chatter surrounding who will be taking on the role. However, the villain having a larger part to play earlier in the story this time around would be a big change, and something that many Harry Potter fans aren’t expecting ahead of time.

When it comes to the Harry Potter movies, Lord Voldemort isn’t shown in his full form until the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He appears in different ways before that, as he attempts to regain his full form, but it is the memorable scene with Cedric Diggory where that truly happens. However, when it comes to HBO’s Harry Potter, all the signs are pointing to Lord Voldemort being part of the show ahead of that point in some capacity.

HBO’s Harry Potter Is Able To Dive Into Lord Voldemort’s Backstory

This Is Something Harry Potter Fans Have Always Wanted To See

The Harry Potter movies provided a compelling portrayal of Lord Voldemort, with the character being both terrifying and charismatic in equal measure. However, HBO has the chance to do something different by highlighting aspects of his past. The movies give a few glimpses of Lord Voldemort when he’s younger, mainly during his time as Tom Riddle at Hogwarts, but fans would like to see what he turns into at that point. There’s a reason Lord Voldemort is so feared within the wizarding world, and it’s because of the terror he created during his initial rise to power. That’s something that isn’t showcased properly in the movies, with conversations being used to allude to that rather than visually revealing it. That’s where HBO’s Harry Potter has the potential to be unique and showcase that aspect of the character to provide even more backstory than the movies ever did.

HBO’s Harry Potter Has The Potential To Make Lord Voldemort Even Scarier

It’s An Easy Way To Make This Adaptation Feel Unique

Lord Voldemort is the ultimate villain of the Harry Potter story, but not seeing him properly until the fourth story does lead to a lot of focus being on other characters. That means there’s a lot of work to be done later on to try and make him appear as fearsome and scary as possible, but HBO’s Harry Potter can alter that. If this version of the story highlights his past and all of the dastardly things he did during his first rise to prominence, then the fear factor surrounding him would increase. Not only does this mean that several other older characters will need to be shown in more detail, but fans will gain a clear understanding of why Lord Voldemort is feared in the manner he is by other witches and wizards. Showcasing the damage that he causes and the true powers that he has in detail would allow him to be an even more important character in this version, which is what people want to see.

Another reason why highlighting more of Lord Voldemort would be beneficial is simply to make the television adaptation feel unique in comparison to the movies. It’s going to be challenging for this version of the story to stand out in comparison to the epic film series, but pushing one of the most important characters in far more detail would achieve exactly that. It would give fans of the franchise more reason to view this version of the story, allowing them to understand exactly why this adaptation of Harry Potter is worth watching in the first place.
