It's been nearly three years since the Harry Potter TV reboot was announced. Since then, we've gotten to know the young actors who will be headlining the cast, which creatives are attached to the show, and the general timeline for filming and production.
The Best Harry Potter Games Of All Time
Even though Harry Potter games tend to be extremely hit-or-miss, a few releases capture the magic of the books, movies, and the overall universe.
We've only gotten hints of when the first season will be ready to air, but now we have a confirmed release window, straight from the mouth of HBO's Chairman and Content CEO, Casey Bloys. It's only a matter of time before Harry Potter fans return to the Wizarding World, in an adaption set to right the movies' wrongs and do real justice to J. K. Rowling's legendary book series.
HBO Exec Reveals Early 2027 Release for the New Harry Potter Show
Bloys recently spoke with Deadline about the Harry Potter TV show and revealed the highly anticipated release window. Previously, Bloys spoke about the series airing later this year, maybe sometime in 2027. Now that production is well under way, Bloys was able to be more specific. HBO's Harry Potter TV show will release in early 2027.
"We’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027."
Bloys' declaration tracks with his earlier statement to Deadline in September 2024, where he said that the Harry Potter TV show would release sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Then, Bloys said that the "writers are just getting started so it’s too soon to talk about airdate."
Harry Potter's New Cast & Crew Are Hard at Work in the UK
Filming for the Harry Potter TV series started in the UK during the summer after the showrunners found its leading cast members. Because this is a total reboot of the show, the original actors comprising the Golden Trio (Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint as Ronald Weasley) have aged out of their roles.
A new generation of Harry Potter is on the horizon. Dominic McLaughlin is playing Harry Potter, Alastair Stout is the new Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton is continuing the legacy of Hermione Granger.
Several other Weasley family members have found their new actors, with the Weasley matriarch Molly Weasley being played by Katherine Parkinson. Twins Tristan and Gabriel Harland are the new Fred and George Weasley, Ruari Spooner will play older brother Percy Weasley, and Gracie Cochrane is playing Ginny Weasley. Arthur and Charlie Weasley have not yet been cast, but as they don't physically appear in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone book, that doesn't mean much. Charlie Weasley, a major supporting character in the books, was completely cut from the films, but it's been confirmed that Charlie will be in the Harry Potter TV show.
As for who will play the Hogwarts Professors in Harry Potter Season 1, we have John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Warwick Davis, who played Filius Flitwick in the original Harry Potter films, is reprising his role as the Charms Professor.
How Nick Frost Prepared for Hagrid Before His Harry Potter Audition
Frost recently interviewed with The Guardian and shared some cool backstory about how he landed the role of Hagrid. Frost's family, like many around the world, has made watching the Harry Potter films a Christmas tradition. Not too shocking, right? But before his audition, Frost really wanted to get the essence of Hagrid right and manifest him getting the role. So, while watching the films, Frost wrote out "Hagrid" 7,000 times.
I’ve seen all the films. We go through them all as a family during Christmas every year. We start on 20 December and finish a week and a half later. Before I was cast as Hagrid, my partner suggested trying to manifest it. So last Christmas, I watched all the films back to back on the Sky Harry Potter channel, while writing out the word “Hagrid” 7,000 times.
And it worked. Maybe not all because of the manifestation, probably 99.9% because of Frost's talent. But perhaps it was just a bit of magic, too.
