Harry Potter Star Tom Felton Explains Why He Was Cast As Draco Malfoy

However, Felton is convinced it’s his more care-free approach that guaranteed the role of Draco Malfoy was all his. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Felton spoke on the audition process that he underwent in order to be cast as Malfoy. Felton went on to reveal that he wasn’t even aware of J.K. Rowling's novels before he went in to audition, let alone read them. Yet, he went on to share with certainty that he fully believes it was his more ‘nonchalant’ take on the role that brought out the inner Draco within him.

"I was also one of the only ones who had no idea what Harry Potter was at the time. Anyone could try out for it, so many excited kids went along who loved the books deeply. I reckon I got the part because I was nonchalant and had no idea what anyone was on about," Felton said. "Wizards in cupboards under the stairs? - and with three older brothers, you learn to be confident quickly. I think Chris Columbus, the director, recognized this slight disinterest and arrogance in me, which he thought could work for Malfoy.”

The Malfoys were infamous for two things. The first one is that the Malfoys are regarded as one of the wealthiest families within the Wizarding community. The second thing is the Malfoys are notoriously known for being 'anti-non-wizard,’ leading with bigotry at the tip of their tongues, just waiting to be professed like a spell. Not to forget, there is also Draco's father's membership with the villainous Death Eaters. Therefore, it makes absolute sense as to why Felton stuck out to the casting crew given his rare boredom with the material, as opposed to the rest of the children's obsession with the Harry Potter books.
