Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is a collectible card game with RPG elements developed by NetEase subsidiary Zen Studio. It was soft-launched in China and Taiwan in September 2021 before receiving an international release in late June 2023. Aside from Android and iOS devices, the game was also ported to PC, although its desktop version was only ever made available in Asia.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Shutting Down on October 29

Publisher Warner Bros. Games has now announced it intends to shut down Harry Potter: Magic Awakened in the Americas, Oceania, and Europe. The mobile CGG's servers in these regions will cease operations on October 29, the company said. Ahead of that move, WB Games had already pulled Harry Potter: Magic Awakened from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store in the West, opting to delist it on August 26. Anyone who already has the game installed on their smartphone or tablet will be able to continue playing it until late October 2024. Android users might also still be able to try the game out by side-loading its APK onto their device over the next two months.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Will Remain Available in Asia

As is usually the case with games that get marked for shuttering, all in-app purchases in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened were disabled as soon as the game's shutdown announcement went live. They are, however, still available on the Asia server, as there are currently no plans to discontinue the game on that continent.

Warner Bros did not elaborate on the decision to pull the plug on the CCG so soon after Harry Potter: Magic Awakened had its global release. But seeing how live-service titles live and die by their revenue-making potential, which itself is tied at the hip with the size of their player bases, this discontinuation suggests that the game wasn't doing particularly well in the West.

Magic Awakened will be the first Harry Potter mobile game to shut down since Niantic's Wizards Unite was discontinued in January 2022. On the bright side, fans of the iconic IP also have some new Harry Potter games to look forward to in the near future, starting with Unbroken Studios' Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which is scheduled to debut on September 3. Beyond that, Avalanche Software has also long been rumored to be working on a sequel to its 2023 hit Hogwarts Legacy.
