With Halloween right around the corner, one of the more underrated slasher horror franchises just got a massive update from its director. Christopher Landon is talking about the latest installment of his very well-liked Happy Death Day franchise after the success of the first two films. There is a bit of a caveat that came with the good news from Landon though.
Happy Death Day 2U was released back in 2019 and since there hasn’t been any iindcation that the slasher horror franchise was getting another installment. Indeed it looked like there was never going to be a Happy Death Day 3, but as it turns out, that’s not from a lack of trying on Landon’s part. He recently talked about those efforts and it seems as though there is at least something in the works, though it has a long road to go and may not even travel down that road when all is said and done.
Happy Death Day 3 Update Should Get People Excited
Speaking to ComicBook during the New York City Comic Con, Landon said he has finished a Happy Death Day 3 treatment. The question now is whether that treatment will ever get turned into a full script and the movie gets greenlit. While saying that there’s definitely no guarantee the flick ever gets made, what he’s envisioning for the installment that would make it a trilogy is something “bigger” than the first two.
“I could say that I wrote a treatment. I didn’t write the script, because I wouldn’t write a script unless it was a sure thing. Here’s the cool thing: It is a bigger movie, and it is not set on the same day as the previous two films. That’s the biggest spoiler I’ve put out there.”
While Landon said that the timeline would move forward a bit after the first two Happy Death Days were set on the same day and had a time loop that caught star Jessica Rothe in a high stakes fight against several different killers all wearing a creepy baby mask, it appears that the basic premise would be roughly the same.
While the sequel to the first Blumhouse hit was not as popular as Happy Death Day, it still made a decent chunk of change when compared to its low budget, but fun romp through a college campus murder plot. The Original Happy Death Day grossed $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget. The sequel nearly doubled its budget to $9 million while almost halving its box office revenue. Of course, a profit of more than $50 million for Blumhouse is nothing to sneeze at as the production company specializes in high-quality horror movies that don’t fit into the “blockbuster” category.

While Landon waits to see if Happy Death Day 3 gets greenlit by Blumhouse, he’s looking forward to his upcoming project, Drop to hit theaters next spring. That film is about a woman who goes out on a blind date, but soon begins getting terrorized by what are essentially Apple AirDrops to her phone that become increasingly threatening and frightening. That project hits theaters in April of 2025.
