Rumors about Halo eventually coming to the PS5 have been spreading like wildfire across the internet for a while now. As Microsoft's flagship franchise that still serves as the main mascot for Xbox, the thought of Halo coming to Sony consoles is something a lot of gamers never thought would be possible.
Halo and Xbox go hand-in-hand, so as these rumors continue to spread, many are eager to finally get confirmation from either Sony or Microsoft regarding the matter. In the first half of the year, Xbox exclusive Forza Horizon 5 was ported to the PS5, being one of the company's biggest titles to be added to the Sony lineup, but that was merely the tip of the iceberg. The recent launch of Gears of War: Reloaded marks the first time that the franchise has been available on a Sony console, and while it was intended to be a historic launch, it might not be going as well as expected.
Gears of War: Reloaded's Surprising Early Stats May Cause Microsoft to Think Twice About Bringing Halo to the PS5
Unexpected Sales Numbers Could Throw a Wrench in Microsoft's Plans
- Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26.
It's still really early in Gears of War: Reloaded's post-launch life, but a fresh report indicates that the game may be having a slow start on the PS5. According to analyst Rhys Elliott, Gears of War: Reloaded's PS5 downloads only account for 18.1% of the game's sales. Gears of War: Reloaded's shockingly low sales could potentially spell trouble for Microsoft's rumored Halo port plans.
Bringing Halo to the PS5 would be a big investment and risk, and Gears of War: Reloaded is potentially being used as a testing ground to see how the former could fare on the platform. Of course, this is purely speculation, but it's definitely not outside the realm of possibility. Apart from Halo, Gears of War is one of Xbox's most popular exclusives, so these low early reports are definitely surprising. Yes, the first Gears of War's gameplay is dated now, but with the port being such a major milestone, it felt safe to assume that it would draw in some decent numbers.
If Gears of War: Reloaded is struggling on PS5, then it may ultimately lead Microsoft to change its mind. Gears of War: Reloaded can still grow over time, but companies and studios tend to be more invested in a game's first weeks.
With Gears of War: Reloaded bringing the franchise to the PS5, it's possible that the upcoming prequel, Gears of War: E-Day, could include Sony in its day-one launch plans. This has yet to be confirmed, though.
Halo Still Has a Major Benefit Over Gears of War
While it's quite surprising that Gears of War: Reloaded is currently standing on shaky ground with the PS5 audience, Halo may still thrive on the console for one reason: its brand recognition. Gears of War is definitely a popular series, but Halo is one of the most recognizable gaming franchises of the 21st century. After Helldivers 2 celebrated its arrival on Xbox with a Halo-inspired Warbond, it seems as though Microsoft is still teasing the possibility of a full-blown port.
Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Halo, which could be the ideal time to release a PS5 port.
It remains to be seen if Gears of War: Reloaded's numbers influence Microsoft's Halo plans or not, but the beloved franchise being brought to Sony consoles still seems possible. Right now, all Halo fans can do is wait and see what the future has in store for the series.
