Summary

  • A Halo fan shared their frustration over finding unused game codes for Halo 4 items right after the Xbox 360 digital store shutdown.
  • The fan expressed regrets over not redeeming the Halo 4 codes earlier, as the Xbox 360 store shutdown means that they're now useless.

A longtime Halo fan realized they had unused game codes a little too late, sharing their unfortunate situation online with the rest of the Xbox community. The codes were meant to give out free Halo 4 items but have since become unusable due to the Xbox 360 digital store shutting down. The player shared this frustrating situation, commenting on the irony of only remembering the Halo codes after the Xbox 360 storefront closed forever.

Though the FPS genre continues to grow more competitive and crowded, Halo has cemented itself as a cornerstone of the genre, with Halo Infinite, the most recent release, proving once again there's something special about Halo's sandbox. Released in 2021, Halo Infinite marked entirely new territory for the franchise, tasking players with braving an open world filled with daunting bosses and a long list of items to find and collect. Halo Infinite also featured the series' most robust multiplayer mode. Its multiplayer marked multiple firsts for the series, launching completely for free, as well as featuring both paid and free seasonal content updates. However, developer 343 Industries first took control of the franchise during Halo 4, with one fan feeling nostalgic for that game a little too late.

Halo Infinite is set to introduce several sweeping new changes that are sure to excite fans of the game's popular Forge mode.

Reddit user NondaYT shared a rather disappointing post on the Xbox community after remembering they had several codes featuring a variety of Halo 4 goodies. The codes were included with the user's Xbox 360, a console that is nearly 20 years old now. However, the user quickly realized that these codes were no longer redeemable due to the Xbox 360 store shutting down, essentially leaving them with very cool, Halo-themed bookmarks.

Halo Fan Remembers Unused Game Codes A Little Too Late

The codes appear to be redeemable for an in-game item in Halo 4, as well as several Halo-themed items for the player's Xbox avatar. The closure of the Xbox 360 store was one of the most heart-wrenching moments in modern gaming history, with the digital storefront permanently shutting down on July 29, 2024. Microsoft had already announced last year it planned to shut down the store, but this didn't make it any easier for fans to say goodbye. In the weeks leading up to the closure of the Xbox 360 storefront, publishers deployed deep discounts on a wide range of games. Hundreds of titles were listed in the store, with indie games making up a significant chunk of the Xbox 360's library.

The first outing from 343 Industries, Halo 4 officially marked the next exciting chapter of the series, planting the iconic Master Chief firmly in an entirely new, action-packed story. Halo 4 takes place after the events of Halo 3, which acted as the "finale" of Bungie's original Halo trilogy. Halo 4 also acted as a bridge between the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One generation of Microsoft consoles. The game has since been made available in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, ensuring Halo 4 lives on, even though the original Xbox 360 store is now gone for good.
