Hades 2 was already packed full of content when it launched into early access back in May 2024. But Supergiant didn't rest on its laurels. Over the last 13 months, Hades 2 has become an even bigger, stronger roguelike experience, and it's finally getting ready to take its last steps.
Supergiant confirmed today that the team is "heading into the final phase of Hades II development", and while a 1.0 release date hasn't been confirmed, the end is in sight. But until then, early adopters of Hades 2 have another major content drop to dive into. Hades 2's "The Unseen" update adds new optional NPC quests, new Warden enemies for certain regions, new music tracks, and a series of new Hidden Aspects for Hades 2's Nocturnal Arms. It's this last addition that might prove to be the most exciting, with it having two potential purposes.
Why Hades 2 Fans Should Check Out Spiritfall
Although Hades 2's full release is still ambiguous, there is a new indie game called Spiritfall that fans may want to check out in the meantime.
Hades 2's New Hidden Weapon Aspects Could Have Two Purposes
Hades 2's New Hidden Aspects Explained
In the final version of the original Hades, players could unlock a series of Hidden Aspects for Zagreus' Infernal Arms. Each weapon had a distinct Hidden Aspect that significantly altered its visual design and moveset, and each Hidden Aspect had its own unique method of obtainment.
For example, Zagreus' Stygius sword could become the legendary Holy Excalibur if players came into possession of the Hidden Aspect of Arthur, which is given to them after they invest five Titan Blood into the sword and speak to Nyx (and after the spear's Aspect of Guan Yu has been obtained). As Excalibur, Zagreus' sword adds +50 health to the player's pool, and its Special attack produces an aura around the player that disables traps and slows enemy projectiles.
Hades 2's latest update has added a new Hidden Aspect to each of the game's Nocturnal Arms.
Hades 2's New Hidden Aspects Add Even More Variety to Combat
There are a total of six new Hidden Aspects in Hades 2, and each one sounds like it's going to shake up its respective weapon quite a bit. The new Hades 2 Hidden Aspects are as follows:
- Witch's Staff - Aspect of Anubis: Create damage fields that draw in enemies and conjure Lone Shades
- Sister Blades - Aspect of Morrigan: Perform a "Blood Triad" finishing move
- Umbral Flames - Aspect of Supay: Fires automatically at enemies and supercharges shots
- Moonstone Axe - Aspect of Nergal: Use heavy strikes and restore health
- Argent Skull - Aspect of Hel: Continuous fire without the need to use Shells
- Black Coat - Aspect of Shiva: Absorb Omega attacks to instantly eliminate foes when their health is low
Each of Hades 2's Nocturnal Arms already had three Aspects each, and with an extra one across the board, even more variety has just been injected into Hades 2's combat.
Hades 2's New Hidden Weapon Aspects Could Point Towards The Series' Future
But gameplay variety might not be the only purpose of Hades 2's new Hidden Aspects. Keen-eyed fans will notice that each of Hades 2's new weapon Aspects reference a distinct mythology, just as the first game's Hidden Aspects did years ago. Anubis comes from Egyptian mythology, Morrigan from Irish folklore, Supay from Incan, Nergal from Mesopotamian, Hel from Norse, and Shiva from Hinduism.
Now, this is purely just speculation, but all of these references to other mythologies could be a subtle tease from Supergiant about the future of the Hades franchise. For instance, the developer's next game could take place in one of the mythologies already teased in Hades 1 or 2, or be some kind of mythology-hopping adventure. Regardless, it's really fun to see Hades continue to embrace so many different cultures.
