Summary
- Guilty Gear Strive for Nintendo Switch won't have crossplay support, but it will run on rollback netcode.
- The Switch version will offer the base game with the roster and first three seasons of DLC.
Arc System Works has confirmed that the upcoming Nintendo Switch port of Guilty Gear Strive will have no crossplay support. 2021's Guilty Gear Strive is one of Arc System Works' most popular fighting games, and it is finally coming to Nintendo Switch. This version of the game was announced at PAX West, and the developer confirmed it will be launching on January 23, 2025.
Guilty Gear Strive was originally released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Many Strive players have praised the game for its unique soundtrack, graphics, and lineup of characters that feature both fan-favorite veterans and several newcomers. Arc System Works is currently working on the fourth season of DLC for Guilty Gear Strive, which includes returning characters like Queen Dizzy and Venom. While the Switch version of Strive is set to offer almost everything that the other versions of the game had, such as the base game's roster and the first three seasons of DLC, the one limitation it will have is no crossplay support.
This detail was confirmed by producer Ken Miyauchi on Twitter, simply stating that the Nintendo Switch version of Guilty Gear Strive will not support crossplay. Miyauchi does note that, while it won't support crossplay with the other versions of Strive, the Switch version does run on rollback netcode, meaning fans will have a relatively smooth gameplay experience online. He also notes that the footage used in the trailer for the Switch version of the game was captured by him personally.
Guilty Gear Strive Has No Crossplay on Switch
There are a lot of fighting games on the Nintendo Switch, such as Mortal Kombat 1, Fighting EX Layer, and Melty Blood: Type Lumina, that do support rollback netcode. However, while certain games like Samurai Shodown and Dragon Ball FighterZ got a rollback netcode patch post-launch, rollback wasn't implemented for them on the Switch.
Cross-platform gaming is becoming normalized today, giving gamers the chance to play against each other regardless of which platform they're on. Certain fighting games like Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid support crossplay and rollback netcode, being able to play between the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game. While Strive already has crossplay support between its existing console and PC versions, it's likely the Switch version chose not to have crossplay in order to not compromise on the already existing experience. In the meantime, fans can also look forward to the fourth season of Strive, which includes Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as an unexpected guest fighter.
