How To Play Knotwords

Knotwords gameplay with several words completed and a green highlight on a misspelled word

Created by Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger, Knotwords sees players presented with several anagrams to solve - the game's tutorial shows players the following:

  • Three boxes and three letters, 'N U F', is completed by typing 'FUN'.
  • Four boxes split into two with the letters 'O W' and 'D R' become 'WORD', as they're next to each other.
  • When boxes intersect with each other, they must form a complete word in both directions - just like a crossword.
  • When a word has been successfully completed, a sound effect plays.
  • If the game does not recognize the word, it is highlighted and must be tried again.

Beyond the tutorial, though, the list below contains tips and features that players should know about.

  • Hints can be accessed by clicking a certain tile and selecting a direction for the 'hint'. This gives the definition of the word that must fit in the gap.
  • The hint will only disappear when the word has been completed correctly.
  • The same letter cannot be used more than once unless the section allows it.
  • It's always easier to complete the smallest sections first, and use them to 'complete' the end of larger sections.
  • If all else fails, guessing random words may prove useful - the game sometimes uses obscure words.
  • Latin words may also be used, so don't get discouraged if the word seems totally fabricated!
  • There's no shame in deleting everything and trying again one step at a time.
  • Hints can be earned by completing a different puzzle in full.
  • Puzzles can be saved & quit, allowing players to return to them at any time.

Alongside the refreshed-daily 'mini', 'classic' and 'twisty' puzzles, new puzzle books are revealed at the beginning of each new month, too, so Knotwords players won't run out of puzzles anytime soon.

Knotwords is available on PC, Android, and iOS.
