The next update for Grand Theft Auto Online is slated to drop on June 13, an established insider reported Thursday, albeit with one important caveat.Much like Grand Theft Auto 5, its online component is pushing 10 years old, although Take-Two's recent shareholder disclosures suggest it's still by far its biggest money machine. The publisher generated $5.3 billion in revenue over its 2023 fiscal year which ended in March, with its latest financial report partially attributing that figure to the continued success of the Grand Theft Auto series, most notably GTA 5 and GTA Online.GTA Online's developer is still pushing out new content for the hit game on a regular basis. Its next update is scheduled to release on June 13, according to known Rockstar insider Tez2, who noted that the date in question is still tentative. The stated timing does seem plausible, not least because recent major updates for GTA Online were all spaced about three months apart, with the last one dropping on March 16.
And while it remains to be seen what kind of story missions Rockstar cooked up this time around, this update presumably won't have a big effect on the developer's overarching content schedule for the game. For context, GTA Online has been holding weekly events with bonus rewards and rotational content for years now and is expected to continue that trend for a while yet.
The latest such promo started just yesterday, offering double GTA bucks and RP rewards for completing Flight School tasks, Freemode challenges, and Stockpile missions, among other things. The event also marked a return of the Pink and Green Camo Mammoth Avenger livery, which is awarded to all Grand Theft Auto Online players who log into the game over the seven-day period ending June 8.
Assuming the next major update for GTA Online does end up launching in mid-June, it's likely to take the place of one such weekly event. And if the Los Santos Drug Wars missions are any indication, it's plausible that Rockstar will roll out the incoming content in stages instead of dropping it all at once. As for what's next for the iconic franchise, recent reports indicated that GTA 6 won't be released before late 2024 at the earliest, so its much-anticipated multiplayer component and sequel to GTA Online is still some way off.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
