A GTA Online player found a bug in the popular multiplayer game when they tried to start a heist and ended up falling through the map. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to make it back onto the GTA Online map until the game respawned them.
Rockstar brought GTA Online to life back in 2013 as a multiplayer mode for their hit game GTA 5, but it eventually turned into a standalone online multiplayer game. GTA Online has had major changes since launch, with Rockstar consistently bringing updates and new content to the game. Heists were added in 2015, and they have been a major part of the game since then. Heists consist of players teaming up to carry out a series of missions that eventually lead to a heist mission and result in a major payoff, and they have been fairly popular and engaging since their release.
In a video posted to the Rockstar subreddit, GTA Online player TheZephyr2003 showcased a bug that sent them falling through the map. At the start of the video, their team is making their way out of a building to begin a heist mission, with TheZephyr2003 bringing up the rear. The door closes on them and traps them inside the building. The textures are glitched, however, and their screen shows see-through walls and a flat gray floor. They try to kill themselves with a grenade, which fails. They then end up tumbling through the floor into empty space. Their parachute opens, and they pan around their character, showing the underside of the map as they glide into nothingness. After a few more seconds of gliding, they suddenly reappear on a city street as if nothing had happened. This isn't the only heist-related bug in GTA Online, but it's definitely quite frustrating.
It is surprising to see a glaring bug like this in such a big part of GTA Online, especially considering that heists have been in the game for seven years now. While bugs are ever present in video games, with the resources and time available, it would make sense that such major bugs would have been fixed in GTA Online heists by this point. Rockstar has been quite responsive and quick to fix major GTA Online bugs in the past, however, so TheZephyr2003's bug should be fixed if it becomes more common and problematic.
Although some players probably enjoy the single-player GTA experience more, it's undeniable that GTA Online has become massively popular among GTA fans. Rockstar has supported this with constant and quality updates to the multiplayer game too, even announcing some major GTA Online updates coming in December. If Rockstar continues to keep up support for GTA Online, it will probably remain a staple for fans of the series.
GTA Online is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
