A new rumor has suggested that Grand Theft Auto Online players might not be able to carry their character over onto the next iteration of the online experience once Rockstar Games launches Grand Theft Auto 6. While Grand Theft Auto 6's trailer has yet to be unveiled, Grand Theft Auto Online players may need to start preparing for a big transition into the next GTA title.

GTA Series Reveals New Sales Milestone After GTA 6 Trailer Announcement

Take-Two Interactive reveals the Grand Theft Auto series passed another incredible sales milestone just as Rockstar breaks silence on GTA 6.

The GTA 6 announcement confirmed that the game's first trailer would drop in December. While many rejoiced at the announcement of the first official trailer, some began to wonder what would happen to GTA Online since it is technically the multiplayer portion of Grand Theft Auto 5. YouTube channel TGG inquired about the online aspect, asking in a tweet, "Did you hear any more specifics on their future plans for GTA Online?" Rockstar Universe responded by saying that it would be a "fresh start for everyone," with players' ranks ultimately not being carried over, though this is only a rumor. Information has only been distributed "through the grapevine," as reported by Rockstar Universe, so GTA fans should take this claim with a massive grain of salt. If the rumor is true, fans can basically expect their GTA Online character to continue existing in the game as it does now, but they will need to make a new character for Grand Theft Auto 6's take on the game mode.

Some players have noted the advantages of everyone starting over by "being on the same level again," though there are some who are disappointed that their current GTA Online character might not carry over to the new game.

Moreover, Rockstar Universe mentions that Rockstar will be using its FiveM acquisition, which could hint at the platform's implementation for GTA Online. The FiveM platform - along with RedM - is part of Cfx.re, an online group that develops modification frameworks for popular games. These games include GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, which support dedicated roleplay servers.

While these details aren't official, Grand Theft Auto players can likely expect many changes to come to GTA Online when the next big installment launches.
