A trusted journalist and Grand Theft Auto 6 insider has expanded on his recent comments surrounding Rockstar's highly anticipated next game being like a PlayStation 5 exclusive, despite the fact that it will also be released on Xbox Series X/S. Many took the comment in a literal sense, believing that Sony had some sort of exclusivity deal with Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto 6, but the journalist has now explained that that's not the case at all, and is rather the business mindset of Sony as the release of one of the biggest video games of all time approaches.

It's fair to say the anticipation and excitement for Grand Theft Auto 6 is like nothing the industry has ever seen before, which is likely why there have been a ton of rumors, leaks, and fan theories about the title. Some of these rumors are much more credible than others, mainly due to the sources that they come from. One major Grand Theft Auto 6 leak from all the way back in 2023 recently resurfaced as an ongoing dispute between Rockstar Games and former employees, all but confirming the rumor, which revealed major plot details about one of the game's two main protagonists, Lucia. It also touched upon some of the new game mechanics that appear to be expanded upon from the studio's last title, Red Dead Redemption 2.

Sony Is Reportedly Treating GTA 6 Like a PS5 Exclusive, Even Though It Isn't

Earlier this month, journalist Jason Schreier revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 still isn't content complete, sparking concerns among the community that yet another delay could be on the cards. However, Schreier noted that it is too soon to say whether the title will be delayed from its November release date, with even Rockstar likely unsure. Another interesting thing noted by the journalist was that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be like a PlayStation 5 exclusive, leading to some confusion as the game is set to launch on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Now, in a new interview with Xbox Expansion Pass, Schreier has clarified his previous statement and explained that it's more to do with how Sony is approaching the monumental release from a business perspective.

"Sony sees this as, essentially, a PlayStation exclusive," Schreier said. "For the purposes of their calendar, they are not going to release things near [Grand Theft Auto 6] because it is going to sell a lot of PlayStations." The journalist then says he expects the title to do well on Xbox and sell a lot of copies across Series X and S, but speculates that the "bulk" of people who purchase Grand Theft Auto 6 will be on PlayStation 5 or will be purchasing a PlayStation 5 solely for the purpose of Grand Theft Auto 6. "That's where the majority of console sales are," he explains. "It's a system seller for [Sony]. They are not going to release Wolverine anywhere near it. They are not gonna release the new, whatever, other new exclusives they have planned for the next two years anywhere in the blast zone of GTA 6."

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently set to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but there are some major concerns that the title could be delayed yet again. When it was first revealed back in 2023, Grand Theft Auto 6 was targeting a Fall 2025 release window, but it was eventually pushed back to May 26, 2026, to allow the studio more time to work on what will undoubtedly be the studio's biggest release to date. However, disappointment struck once again last year when Rockstar confirmed another delay, this time pushing the next GTA game back by a further six months.

With most of the year still left to go before the game is available, fans are eager to get another glimpse at Grand Theft Auto 6 via a third trailer. As it has now been eight months since Trailer 2 dropped, the community is speculating that a third could be on the way as early as next month, mainly due to the fact that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, is set to host a new quarterly earnings call on February 3. Although it is never set in stone, Rockstar has been known to reveal new information about its titles just before these calls, so fans are hoping the same thing could happen again.
