The latest batch of Grand Theft Auto 6 screenshots shows Jason aiming a rifle with both eyes open, as recently spotted by one eagle-eyed fan. This easy-to-miss detail appears to offer a bit more insight into one of the two protagonists of GTA 6.

The first public mention of Jason can be traced back to the massive Rockstar leak from September 2022, which saw hackers obtain an early build of the much-anticipated game. While he was briefly featured in the game's reveal trailer, shared in December 2023, he wasn't officially named until the second GTA 6 trailer dropped in early May 2025. Halfway into that promo video, he introduces himself as Jason Duval while speaking with a correction facility officer.

While reviewing the big batch of GTA 6 screenshots that were released alongside the game's latest trailer, one eagle-eyed fan recently took notice of an image where Jason is seen using an M4-like assault rifle somewhere in Vice City. Though the nighttime shot is tightly framed and doesn't reveal much at first glance, it clearly shows Jason aiming the rifle with both eyes open, the fan observed.

Jason Duval Possibly Has a Military Background

Aiming a firearm with both eyes open isn't intuitive for most people, but it's a technique commonly taught in the military. Not closing the non-dominant eye allows for better peripheral vision and improved situational awareness in combat scenarios, both of which can contribute to faster target acquisition. Jason's form displayed in the recent GTA 6 character screenshots hence implies that he has some sort of military background or has spent significant time in a similar high-stakes profession. E.g., some law enforcement personnel are also trained to shoot this way, though the technique remains more prevalent in the (U.S.) Military.

Jason Wouldn't Be the First GTA Protagonist With a Military Past

If Jason truly does end up having a military past, he wouldn’t be the first GTA protagonist with such a background. Niko Bellic is the most well-known example, with his war experiences and trauma often taking center stage throughout GTA 4. Vic Vance from Vice City Stories also served in the army, with players getting a front-row seat to the events that led to his discharge. Even Claude Speed from GTA 3 was implied to have been in the military in some early promotional materials for the game, though this was never outright confirmed.

The chances of Jason's military background being confirmed before GTA 6 is out appear slim. Based on Rockstar's track record, any additional trailers and marketing materials released before the game itself is out will likely focus on gameplay instead of story and characters. GTA 6 is scheduled to launch for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 26, 2026.
