A Grand Theft Auto 5 data miner and leaker has uncovered a scrapped gameplay feature that would have allowed players to climb pipes, walls, and more. The feature appears to have been in its infancy stages when it was chosen against, but newly discovered in-game files from Grand Theft Auto 5 give fans a great idea of what the game could have looked like if the feature had made its way into the full release.

The launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013 was a huge moment for the franchise, with some monumental leaps that made it one of the most technologically advanced and visually gorgeous games in the series. The scale of Grand Theft Auto 5 was something fans had never seen before in an open-world game, and it only got bigger and bigger as years went by. Alongside some huge updates to Grand Theft Auto Online, cementing it as one of the most popular live-service titles of all time, Grand Theft Auto 5 has been re-released and visually improved multiple times throughout the years, keeping it at the top of sales charts for well over a decade.

GTA 5 Leaker Uncovers Scrapped Feature

While Grand Theft Auto 5 may have been one of the biggest releases of all time, could Rockstar have done even more to add to the world's immersion? Well, leaker Lucas7yoshi_RS has uncovered evidence that suggests Rockstar was planning to do exactly that with an intricate climbing mechanic. The data miner appears to have found unused assets from when the feature was in its testing phase, showing how Rockstar was tinkering with the idea of allowing players to climb to the top of certain buildings via drainpipes and walls. The feature was known as "handholds," and it looks like it may have been a combination of the ledge-climbing/shuffling mechanic from Grand Theft Auto 4 and the drainpipe climbing in L.A Noire.

Why this feature was scrapped will likely remain a mystery forever, but there's a good chance that it simply came down to Rockstar wanting to prioritize other elements of the game. This also isn't the first time that scrapped Grand Theft Auto 5 content has been discovered by leakers. One of the most famous examples of this is the Agent Trevor DLC, which would have added more single-player content to the game and seen Trevor become an undercover operative for the FBI. Trevor's voice and motion capture actor Steven Ogg revealed that he had already filmed parts of the DLC before Rockstar opted to scrap it in favor of further support for Grand Theft Auto Online.

There have even already been claims that Rockstar has scrapped the original script for Grand Theft Auto 6, which would have featured three playable protagonists - a crooked cop, his son, and a "right-hand man" to a Colombian drug lord. Although Grand Theft Auto 6 is still another 9 months away, we now know that the story will revolve around Lucia and Jason and "an easy score gone wrong," which then sees the duo wrapped up in a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida.
