The new farming simulator, Grow a Garden, has reached 16,000,000 concurrent players on Roblox. It recently shattered several records, including becoming the first Roblox game to surpass 5,000,000 players. Apparently, this is just the beginning for the indie title, as it now seems poised to compete with some of the most popular games in the world.
Grow a Garden follows the core gameplay loop found in most idle farming simulators: Plant, harvest, sell, automate, and expand. However, it introduces a creative twist. Plants continue to grow while the player is offline. In other words, after planting and meeting the basic needs of their crops, players can leave the game and return later to find fully grown plants or trees. While the concept may seem simplistic to some modern players, it has successfully attracted millions.
Roblox Game Has More Active Players Than the Top 100 Steam Games Combined
Following the launch of its 1.07.0 update, Grow a Garden had nearly eight million active players, which is more than the top 100 Steam games combined.
According to Rolimon's, Grow a Garden's all-time peak concurrent player count exceeded 16,000,000 on June 14, following the release of the 1.10.0 update. For comparison, Fortnite previously held the record with just over 14,000,000 players during a live event. Grow a Garden's peak was roughly 14% higher. To put that further into perspective, this number rivals the combined all-time peak player counts of the top ten games on Steam. However, it's worth noting that after the June 14 update, the game's concurrent players dropped back to its usual daily average of around 3,000,000.
Grow a Garden's Player Count Might Lead to Controversy
One of the controversies surrounding Roblox's popular farming sim involves accusations of botting. Some fans suspect that Grow a Garden is filled with bots and that the actual number of real players is far lower than reported. Others, however, argue that the game's success stems from its relaxing gameplay. As one of Roblox's most laid-back experiences, it appeals to a broad audience, including both adults and younger players. In other words, they believe Grow a Garden's popularity isn't inflated by bots, it's driven by its accessibility and cozy design.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Grow a Garden. The recent buzz is likely to draw even more players, and it's now up to the developers to keep the momentum going with fresh updates. Based on fan reactions, new plants, pets, and gardening items are among the most requested additions, and these appear to be the developers' main focus, which is a promising sign. Many believe that if the game stays on its current trajectory, it has a strong chance of becoming one of the most popular games of all time.
