The Grand Theft Auto 6 rumor mill has been churning again, this time regarding the possibility of single-player DLC for the game. Very little is known about Rockstar's next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating about GTA 6's release date and analyzing a bevy of rumors and leaks.
Prior to Grand Theft Auto 5, Rockstar was no stranger to single-player DLC. Grand Theft Auto 4 received the excellent The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony expansion packs, which added all-new narratives and playable characters to the game. The company would go on to launch Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption, which is considered iconic for many fans. Rockstar has stated that single-player DLC for GTA 5 was in the pipeline, but the developers ultimately opted to shift their focus onto Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA Online. GTA Online is still getting new content, and Red Dead Online has gotten expansions as well, but neither GTA 5 nor Red Dead Redemption 2 have received any single-player DLC, disappointing many fans.
These disappointed fans may be in luck, however, as recent comments from established GTA insider and reporter Tek2 suggest that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be getting single-player DLC. Tek2 stated that Rockstar plans to release "episodic content, aka [single-player] DLC," after the initial launch of GTA 6. The leaker didn't go into much detail as to what this episodic content could contain, but stated that they would likely involve map updates and would come as frequently as the expansions to the game's online mode.
Tez2 has predicted GTA 6 DLC before, suggesting ambitious content releases like entirely new cities to explore. Tek2's most recent comments shed a bit more light on what this single-player DLC could look like, as they liken it to the scrapped single-player expansions for Grand Theft Auto 5. The prediction that single-player DLC could be released as often as multiplayer DLC may seem a bit far-fetched, given Rockstar's strategy with GTA 5, however.
That said, the idea of single-player DLC for Grand Theft Auto 6 isn't so unrealistic. Demand for this sort of content certainly exists, and Tez2 has previously speculated that Rockstar could spread GTA 6's content across a number of different DLCs, which would allow the game to release earlier. Additionally, Red Dead Online may have proved that the success of GTA Online isn't so easily replicated, which could encourage Rockstar to shift gears when it comes to post-launch support for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in development.
