A European retailer leaks the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date, but fans will probably feel that the timing is incredibly ambitious. Rockstar has not officially announced the game but rumors have been growing about GTA 6's celebrity voice actors and cities.
Austrian video game retailer, Gameware.at, has posted several listings for GTA 6, prompting speculation from fans. Before being deleted, the listings claimed GTA 6 would be "coming in 2020" for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The listings also offered the game as a "D1 Edition," though it's unclear if this stands for day one and what gamers who buy it would be getting. The placeholder art for GTA 6 is like the GTA 5 art and has a banner with the word "SIX" hanging from the numerals.
Gameware.at has leaked unannounced games before. The retailer had listings for Need for Speed Heat and Devil May Cry 5 before these games were officially announced and so it's not impossible for the Austrian company to have insider information. Fans have also wondered if an announcement is going to come soon as Rockstar Games is hiring someone to create a trailer, which could potentially be for GTA 6.
However, if Rockstar is making GTA 6, it does seem unlikely that the game is going to be released in 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Rockstar developer Rob Nelson confirmed that the company is planning more DLC for GTA 5 and said that a huge number of people are playing the game. If GTA 5 is making money for Rockstar and developers have more ideas for DLC, the company probably isn't going to reveal the next game in the series.
Rockstar has also been hiring for PS5 and Xbox Series X developers. The developer released GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One after releasing it on PS3 and Xbox 360 and while the game looks great on the newer consoles, it wasn't built for them. Making GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X allows Rockstar to make it a much larger and better looking game and the developer may not want to put the game in a box by making it for PS4 and Xbox One.
One YouTube channel is driving around in GTA 5 until GTA 6 is announced which is nearly as ambitious as the suggestion that the new game is releasing this year. That YouTuber will be hoping that Rockstar makes an announcement soon, but the game probably isn't going to be available for a while.
