With little more than an official trailer to go off, Grand Theft Auto 6 fans have been rabidly speculating about what the game's story will look like. There's a good chance that GTA 6's Bonnie and Clyde inspired narrative will be at the forefront of the experience, in contrast to the relatively pared-down story of GTA 5. That said, there was one dramatic GTA 5 plot development that may make a return, at least in spirit.

One of the most widely circulated GTA 6 story theories revolves around the boyfriend character (who leaks refer to as Jason): it's been speculated that he is either an undercover or rogue police officer. This hasn't been touched on by Rockstar or any other official sources, but it seems plausible, considering the story's apparent focus on trust, a theme that punctuates the reveal trailer. Another key piece of evidence supporting this theory is the brief shot of police body cam footage, which some have suggested could be from Jason's perspective. Admittedly, the evidence supporting the idea is a bit lean for now, but the narrative setup would make sense and has the potential to be quite compelling.

GTA 6's Overt Meta Narrative Should Play on Both Sides of the Fence

Grand Theft Auto 6's trailer makes references to real-world newsworthy events, but it should not stop there with its meta narrative.

Bringing Back GTA 5's Multi-Ending Structure In GTA 6

GTA 5 Makes Players Define Their Loyalty in the Finale

Though GTA Online establishes a canon ending for GTA 5, the base game's story branches off into one of three directions just before the finale. The three options hinge on a decision that the players make as Franklin, who is being coerced by both Devin Weston and the FIB. The three options are as follows:

  • Side with Weston and kill Michael
  • Abide by the FIB's demands and kill Trevor
  • Deathwish: take the fight to both groups and save everyone

GTA 5's ending is the culmination of each character's ambition and poor decision-making. Over the course of the game, the main trio goes further down a path of danger and destruction, getting into bed with groups that don't have their best interests in mind. The three choices represent the pitfalls of these mistakes. This concept could be polished and deepened in GTA 6, which might be even better suited to this sort of finale.

GTA Online canonization aside, most GTA 5 players would consider Deathwish to be the canon ending, as there's no real incentive to kill Michael or Trevor. This could be different in GTA 6's approach to player choice, though.

A Cop Plot Would Be a Natural Fit for a GTA 5-Style Ending

GTA 6 could recapture the essence of GTA 5's choice-based ending, assuming the cop theory turns out to be true. Whether Jason is an undercover, corrupt, or rogue cop, he might be torn between his law enforcement role and his romantic relationship with Lucia, which could culminate in an explosive and deadly finale. If GTA 6's story is equally focused on Jason and Lucia, then players could have a choice to make as the plot reaches its climax: side with Lucia and kill Jason, arrest or kill Lucia as Jason, or defy all the odds and rebel against both the police system and whatever crime syndicate Lucia is connected with, resulting in both partners making it out alive.

This would serve as a natural and meaningful elevation of the choices presented at the end of GTA 5. Both characters would be pressured by outside forces, but the conflict would be much more personal, as Jason and Lucia would naturally have a closer relationship than, say, Franklin and Trevor. GTA 6's focus on trust could also lead to more key choices throughout the game that impact the ending, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system. Obviously, this idea is pinned on a fairly unsubstantiated theory, but it would be a reasonable and exciting path for the game's story to take.
