Summary

  • Fans are creating a Dreamcast port of GTA 3, a landmark game that paved the way for open-world titles.
  • GTA 3 originally started as a Dreamcast game before moving to PS2.
  • Limited options for playing the original GTA 3 make this fan project to bring it to Dreamcast exciting.

Fans are working on a Dreamcast port of Grand Theft Auto 3, which would make Rockstar's iconic open-world game playable on Sega's final console for the first time ever. Grand Theft Auto 3 is quite easily one of the most important video games ever made. It launched the Grand Theft Auto series to new heights, established Rockstar Games as a household name, laid the groundwork for countless open-world games to follow, and is one of the best-selling and highest-rated video games ever made. GTA 3 is a landmark release, though fans have limited options when it comes to playing it.

Initially, Grand Theft Auto 3 was a PlayStation 2 exclusive. It eventually made its way to PC, Xbox, and mobile devices. Grand Theft Auto 3 was also released on PS4, though that version of the game has since been replaced by the far less popular Definitive Edition that completely changes the graphics and introduces some unfortunate technical problems not present in the original. Now, it seems Grand Theft Auto fans may soon have the chance to experience Grand Theft Auto 3 on yet another platform.

Grand Theft Auto 3 Modder Shows How the Game Would Look With an Unreal Engine 5 Remake

A highly skilled modder shares a stunning concept video envisioning what a GTA 3 remake using Unreal Engine 5 could look like.

A video by The Sega Guru details how developer SKMP is porting Grand Theft Auto 3 to the Sega Dreamcast. The project is a huge undertaking, and as pointed out by Time Extension, the game is only playable on modded Dreamcast consoles with 32MB. What's especially interesting about this attempt to bring Grand Theft Auto 3 to the Sega Dreamcast is that GTA 3 development actually started on Sega's ill-fated console.

Grand Theft Auto 3 is Getting a Fan-Made Dreamcast Port

While development was eventually shifted to the PS2, Grand Theft Auto 3 started as a Sega Dreamcast game. Unfortunately, the Sega Dreamcast flopped and found itself unable to compete with the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox. The decision was then made to shift Grand Theft Auto 3 development to the significantly more successful PS2, and the rest is history. But since GTA 3 was once planned as a Dreamcast game, it's fitting that this fan project is finally making it a reality.

Right now, those interested in playing the original Grand Theft Auto 3 will have to dig out a PS2 or Xbox or have already purchased a digital version of the game. Otherwise, the only option is the Definitive Edition of GTA 3, which, as previously mentioned, has some unique problems that make it far less appealing than the 2001 original.
