After cancelling the last two events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Comic-Con is looking to return with a bang as various films, TV, and game studios will descend on the city for a weekend of big announcements and news. Rumors have been flying about what attendees may see, whether it is a first look at Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever or Henry Cavill possibly donning Superman's cape once again. On the gaming side, Warner Bros. Interactive looks to take advantage of this attention by showcasing more of Gotham Knights at the convention by teasing a look at new Batgirl gameplay.Gotham Knights is the latest game from Warner Bros. Montreal, which previously worked on Batman: Akham Origins, and is the first wholly original Batman game from the studio. The game centers on Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin in the wake of Batman's apparent death as the team tries to fill their mentor's void and defend Gotham City. While the team will face familiar foes like Mr. Freeze and Penguin, the real threat is the mysterious Court of Owls which looks to tighten its grip on Gotham from behind the scenes with Batman seemingly out of the picture. Warner Bros. Montreal previously unveiled new gameplay for Nightwing and Robin, showing off what Dick Grayson and Tim Drake bring to the team's fight to stop the Court of Owls. The next character to get the spotlight will be Batgirl herself who, from previous gameplay, appears to play the closest to the Batman players are familiar with from the Arkham series. Actor America Young, who will portray Batgirl in Gotham Knights, posted a quick tease for San Diego Comic-Con on Twitter which was subsequently shared by Gotham Knight's official account.
The version of Batgirl will be none other than the original, Barbara Gordon, who is not only reeling from the loss of Batman but the death of her father, Commissioner James Gordon. However, the choice was met with criticism when WB Montreal released its backstory for Batgirl, confirming she had fully recovered from the Joker's gunshot which left her wheelchair-bound for 20 years in the comics.
After Batgirl's gameplay trailer, the only character left to get the spotlight will be Red Hood, the former Robin-turned-violent-vigilante Jason Todd. He is the only character of the four who uses guns, in keeping with his comic book counterpart, though WB Montreal confirmed the game's version uses non-lethal rounds to incapacitate criminals. He also appears to be the physically strongest of the four characters, using the aforementioned range weapons with slower, but more powerful, punchs and kicks in close-quarter fights.
Gotham Knights is scheduled to release October 25 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
