Summary

  • Stranger Things actor Matthew Modine joins the next Godzilla vs Kong movie.
  • The Godzilla and Kong sequel is assembling an ensemble cast of new and familiar faces.
  • The most recent MonsterVerse movie became the highest-grossing despite mixed reviews.

The next Godzilla vs Kong movie cast added another Stranger Things actor to Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise. The actor joins a stacked cast in Godzilla and King Kong's next film.

Legendary Pictures' MonstersVerse franchise launched with director Gareth Edwards' Godzilla in 2014. Over a decade later, the shared universe includes 5 feature films and two television shows. The most recent feature film entry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, was one of the franchise's less-acclaimed installments. However, it became the highest-grossing MonsterVerse movie with $571.9 million worldwide. The inevitable sequel is now moving forward and is assembling an ensemble cast of human faces to join Godzilla and Kong, with the latest addition coming from Netflix's Stranger Things.

Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel Casts A Familiar Stranger Things Actor

Per Deadline, Stranger Things star Matthew Modine has closed a deal with Legendary Pictures to join the MonsterVerse's next Godzilla vs. Kong movie. The Hollywood Reporter notes that its sources say Modine will play a general. Modine is perhaps best known to younger audiences for his role as Dr. Martin Brenner in Stranger Things–the antagonistic government scientist who conducted unethical experiments on children with paranormal abilities, including Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven. Of course, Modine has had a notable career spanning several decades with roles in iconic films such as Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, Robert Altman's Short Cuts, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, and Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Who Else is in the Next Godzilla vs. Kong Movie?

Modine is not the first Stranger Things actor to join the MonsterVerse franchise. Bobby Brown starred in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (the third MonsterVerse movie) as Madison Russell, the daughter of Kyle Chandler's Dr. Mark Russell and Vera Farmiga's Dr. Emma Russell. Two years later, Brown reprised the role in Godzilla vs. Kong. As of this writing, the next Godzilla vs. Kong movie cast mostly features franchise newcomers like The Last of Us season 2 star Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Dan Stevens is, thus far, the only actor reprising his role from a previous MonsterVerse movie.

While the MonsterVerse movies aren't known for having the best human characters, most of the actors involved have always given it their all. Some fans believe the next MonsterVerse film should only feature kaiju without human characters. However, if there must be human characters in Godzilla and King Kong's next cinematic adventure, Modine is undoubtedly a welcomed addition to the franchise.

The next Godzilla vs Kong sequel is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 26, 2027.
