Godzilla Minus One directed by Takashi Yamazaki will be re-released on AMC theaters in the United States on November 1 to mark the franchise's 70th anniversary, ComicBook reported. It will only screen for a limited time with over 10-minute exclusive bonus footage. "The Academy Award Winning film is back in theaters to celebrate the King of the Monsters' 70th anniversary, with approximately 13 minutes of exclusive bonus content to mark the release of the first film. Japan, devastated after the war, faces a new threat in the form of Godzilla. How will the country confront this impossible situation," AMC Theaters said in a statement.
There is no detail about what the bonus content will be. However, the Godzilla MInus One director previously said that one scene did not make it into the final cut. Talking about the deleted scene, Yamazaki said it was set on Odo Island and featured a younger Godzilla before he transformed into the powerful beast he was. "There was one scene, however, on Odo Island in the beginning when Shikishima lands I had a scene in my mind I thought of it after we were done with production so unfortunately, they wouldn't let me shoot pick-ups," the filmmaker explained during the screening of Godzilla Minus One and Q&A with Yamazaki from Landmarks Sunset Theatre in February 2024.
Godzilla Minus One released in 2023, was deeply connected to the first movie. It somehow brought fans back to the franchise's roots, so it made sense if the 70th anniversary would be marked by bringing it to the cinemas. Minus One is a modern, full-color film that drew inspiration from the original movie released in black and white due to budget constraints. However, the monochrome cinematography only enhanced the film's grim, post-war atmosphere and serious tone. Godzilla Minus One can be considered a direct reboot of the 1954 movie because both were set in Japan after World War II and focused on nuclear themes. The two movies also highlighted the horror and destruction Godzilla brought as a terrifying beast akin to the loss and devastation humans faced following the nuclear bombing during World War II. Both films explore the same theme and the 2023 film was reportedly titled as such because Japan was already at "zero" following the nuclear attacks and it put Japan into a lower position, hence the use of the words "minus one."
