The upcoming God of War TV series from Prime Video has its Kratos, as Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures announced that actor Ryan Hurst has been tapped to play the Ghost of Sparta. Known for his roles in shows like Sons of Anarchy, Hurst is not new to the God of War franchise, as he previously appeared in God of War Ragnarok as the voice of Thor.
The God of War TV show is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Despite its initial announcement in 2022, God of War has seen some bumps along the way. The project restarted development in 2024 after several key staff members departed the show. Amazon and Sony then brought in Ronald D. Moore as the lead showrunner. Moore later stated he was working on God of War scripts with Sony's Santa Monica Studio, including God of War series creative director Cory Barlog. Barlog is credited as an executive producer of the God of War TV show, alongside PlayStation executive Hermen Hulst. As of this writing, God of War is scheduled to begin filming in March 2026 in Vancouver.
A Big New Upgrade for the PS5 Pro Could Be Right Around the Corner
A new PS5 Pro leak suggests a major upgrade is coming soon and may confirm earlier statements from Lead System Architect Mark Cerny.
God of War TV Series Reveals Who Plays The Ghost of Sparta
Two months before principal filming of God of War was slated to start, Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures have shared who will step into the role of Kratos in the upcoming show. The studios confirmed on January 14 that actor Ryan Hurst will play the titular God of War. Some of Hurst's previous acting credentials include playing Harry "Opie" Winston in the fan-favorite crime drama Sons of Anarchy and high school football athlete Gerry Bertier in Disney's 2000 biographical sports film Remember the Titans.
However, Hurst's name may be familiar to God of War fans. Hurst previously voiced Thor, the gigantic Norse God of Thunder, in God of War Ragnarok. Hurst's performance as Thor was positively received, and he was nominated for a BAFTA award for best performer in a supporting role in 2023. The BAFTA award went to another God of War Ragnarok voice actor, Laya DeLeon Hayes, who played Angrboda. Hurst joins actors Terrence C. Carson and Christopher Judge in playing Kratos.
The upcoming God of War TV series will focus on the popular Norse saga, with the events of 2018's God of War game depicted as part of the show's plot. Kratos and Atreus are confirmed to appear in the God of War show, with other characters like Baldur and Freya likely to follow. Throughout the story, Kratos and Atreus will learn from one another, with their relationship as father and son being a prominent plot point that will test them. Despite the reveal of Hurst as the Ghost of Sparta, God of War still has some outstanding roles to be announced. Important characters from God of War's Norse saga, such as Atreus, Freya, and Odin, have not yet had any acting announcements confirmed by Amazon or Sony as of this writing.
Other God of War Roles May Be Confirmed Soon
Although God of War has revealed its lead actor, other roles may still be revealed before filming begins. Past leaks and rumors concerning the God of War TV series indicated that Baldur, the antagonist of 2018's God of War, could be played by Max Parker. Parker's acting resume includes appearances in Boots and Doctor Who. Other rumors claimed that the thunderous Thor may be played by Olafur Darri Olafsson, who appeared in shows like Severance. Of course, barring any official word from Amazon or Sony, rumors about God of War's unannounced roles should be taken with a fine grain of salt.
While the God of War Prime Video series is about to enter its production phase, the game series that inspired it has remained quiet following the launch of God of War Ragnarok's free Valhalla DLC in 2023. With rumors about the direction that the God of War franchise could go following the events of Ragnarok, time will tell when the Ghost of Sparta will return to PlayStation consoles.
