After completing the game's thirteenth chapter and one of the resulting side quests, God of War Ragnarok players will gain access to the Vanaheim Crater: a new area full of dangerous creatures and bountiful rewards. As they explore the crater's depths, they'll start to come across large orange crystals, which they'll be able to destroy to get their hands on some unique resources.

Initially, players won't know what to do with Crystalline Shards and Fragments, though the resources' in-game descriptions will hint that they may become useful if players can find a way to purify them. Unfortunately, God of War Ragnarok players are given no real explanation as to how this purification process works, leading many to wonder what Crystalline Shards and Fragments are for.

Players will be able to get Crystalline Shards and Fragments by destroying the large orange crystals than can be found throughout the crater using the Draupnir Spear. To do so, they'll simply need to throw a spear at the crystal and then detonate it by pressing the Triangle button. They can then pick up the resulting pieces to add them to their inventories.

Any Crystalline Shards or Fragments that aren't picked up will be automatically sent to the large chest at Brok and Sindri's workshop, allowing players to break hard-to-reach crystals without having to worry about picking up the shards.

In order to purify the Crystalline Shards and Fragments that they find in the Vanaheim Crater players will need to take them to a special area called The Wishing Well. This special area can be accessed via the Sinkholes after completing the Crag Jaw Dragon hunt. If they leave via the other exit though, players will be able to drop a chain down so that they can access the well via the crater's entrance, making it much easier to return later on.

Once they're at the Wishing Well, players should look for a large orange crystal on the stone slab near the water in the center of the area. Destroying this crystal with the Draupnir Spear will lead to some of the fragments falling into the water and being cleansed, with players then able to throw in any Crystalline Shards or Fragments that they have in their possession to purify them.

In return for doing so, players will receive Gleaming, Shining, and Sparkling Crystals, which are special crafting components that can be used to upgrade certain weapons, shields, and armor to their highest levels. They'll also receive the following unique items to help them with the trials to come:

  • Plackart of Fallen Stars (Chest Armor)
  • Runic Hailstone Knob (Axe Attachment)
  • Celestial Panacea (Amulet Enchantment)
  • Bracers of Fallen Stars (Wrist Armor)
