Summary

  • God of War: Ragnarok offers numerous improvements, epic storylines, and armor sets to enhance Kratos against enemies
  • Picking the right armor set is crucial as some, like Risen Snow, offer limited benefits and may not be worth the investment
  • The diverse armor sets like Enlightenment or Mani's Set of Wisdom may have situational perks, making them less appealing to players

The numerous improvements made in God of War: Ragnarok make it one of the better sequels fans can get their hands on. From a journey to scatter Faye's ashes all the way to figuring out a way to stop Ragnarok, the story in this game is more epic than ever before. This makes it important to find the best armor players can get their hands on to increase Kratos' level and make him more effective against the enemies that stand in his way.

God Of War Ragnarok: Best Relics, Ranked

Kratos has a bundle of amazing relics at his disposal in God of War Ragnarok that can easily turn the toughest of enemies into trophies.

This is easier said than done, given the sheer number of armor sets present in the game, which can make this decision way more complicated for players. With the resource drop being rather stingy at times, it's easy to see why players would want to focus on the armor that aligns with the build they wish to pursue. Meanwhile, a relatively easier decision to make is to ignore certain armor sets that don't boast the benefits players want to enjoy in a game where combat can become rather multi-faceted with the right equipment choices.

Risen Might & Risen Stun

Any content that is locked behind a pre-order is bound to attract its fair share of hate, and what makes the Risen Snow set more frustrating in the eyes of many is a lack of any major benefits that will compel players to invest in a Level 1 armor. There's no denying that launching and juggling enemies in God of War Ragnarok is a blast, but this doesn't happen often enough to justify sinking a lot of resources in this armor set.

While there's no denying that this armor has a great look that makes it appealing from a purely cosmetic standpoint, its usability in combat is severely gimped. Most tough enemies can't be launched in the first place, and smaller foes aren't so much of a threat that players must rely on launching them every single time to make the most of this armor set's bonus.

Armament Focus & Runic Affliction

Frost Awaken and Flame Whiplash are two great additions to Kratos' moveset, letting him charge up his Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos respectively to do additional elemental damage and pulverize his enemies. While it may be a fun way to diversify Kratos' moveset, most fans would agree that relying on these special moves against tougher enemies is easier said than done. It's important to mix up Kratos' combos depending on the situation to maximize his DPS.

This is why the Enlightenment Set can be a tough sell, especially if players don't use Flame Whiplash and Frost Awaken all that often. The only time this armor may be useful is when players are trying to master both moves, but the novelty wears off soon after and most players would prefer to switch their armor instead of upgrading a set with such limited usage in combat.

Elemental Antagonizer & Prolonged Affliction

The combat in God of War Ragnarok can get chaotic in no time. It's fine to keep track of status effects, but most players would prefer to rely on efficient means of dealing damage that cover all their bases instead of a few. This is why Mani's Set of Wisdom can be a tough sell for players, especially since both Extinguish Flames and Vaporize Frost are rather situational and not something players can rely on at all times.

God Of War Ragnarok: Best Freya Skills To Unlock, Ranked

If players want to maximize the potential of Freya, the Valkyrie Queen in God of War Ragnarok, then these skills will be essential.

It's fun to punish enemies with the Blades of Chaos when they're frozen and hack burning foes with the Leviathan Axe. However, the lack of any mastery options when it comes to these skills coupled with the overt reliance on burning or freezing foes makes this armor less appealing in the eyes of many.

Ranged Attacks Are Useful But Won't Be A Primary Focus For Many

Empowered Range & Ranged Specialist

The Hunter's Set is a bit of a mixed bag. The Ranged Specialist perk attained from the gauntlets and belt is certainly useful, providing a ranged attack damage bonus that is certainly appealing for players who like throwing their axe and spear at opponents or using the Blades of Chaos to hit enemies. However, the perk of the chest armor is far from great and isn't appealing in a game where split-second decisions are required in combat.

Empowered Range bolsters the damage of a ranged attack as long as players hold the aim button down for a few seconds. In a game where combat is frenetic and leaves little room for players to take a breather, Kratos will be asking for a beatdown if he leaves himself vulnerable for a few seconds just to charge a ranged attack that can miss. The only time this perk is useful is against enemies that aren't too aggressive, and such foes can be taken out easily without relying on this perk.

1 Survival Set

The Lack Of Any Special Perks Doesn't Make Up For The Massive Stat Bonus

Survival Set in God of War Ragnarok

The first armor set players get in God of War Ragnarok doesn't seem all that special. With the lowest stats of any armor in the early run, most players would prefer to switch out the Survival Set for something else the first chance they get. While this is understandable, the reason why people may choose to upgrade the Survival Set is because of the massive stat boost it offers at later levels, making it a contentious addition to a conversation about armor sets that pale in comparison to others.

However, all these high stats seem frivolous in the eyes of many once they see that the Survival Set has no perk to offer. In a game where forming unique builds is a huge part of what freshens up the combat over the course of its lengthy run, Survival Set is arguably the most boring armor set in God of War Ragnarok. The amount of resources required to bring out the true potential of this armor is a huge ask in the eyes of many and not worth the overall investment.
