Summary

  • Insider rumors suggest the next God of War will be a 2.5D Metroidvania title, not the usual 3D action game.
  • The new game is rumored to be a smaller-scale standalone prequel set in ancient Greece.
  • A reveal could potentially happen at the June 4 PlayStation State of Play or at Summer Game Fest.

There might be a new God of War game in the works after all, but rumors suggest it’s something fans might not have expected from the long-running action franchise. There has been much speculation about the future of God of War since God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC launched back in late 2023, with conflicting rumors about Santa Monica Studio's plans for the next game. 2022’s God of War Ragnarok closed the book on Kratos and Atreus’s Norse saga while leaving things open for either character to return in a starring role later on.

Some of the rumors have hinted that there will be a new God of War game released later this year, and that it will go back to the time of Kratos’ original rampage through ancient Greece for a standalone prequel story. Insiders have claimed that this new entry would be smaller in scope than the two Norse God of War games, similar to Spider-Man: Miles Morales or The Last of Us: Left Behind.

Jeff Grubb, the gaming journalist who shared the previous rumors of a new God of War game for 2025, recently spoke with Insider Games’ Tom Henderson on Twitter about the potential future of God of War. According to them, this next entry won’t be the usual 3D action game, but rather a 2.5D Metroidvania-style title similar to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Next God of War Could Be 2.5D Metroidvania Title

No further details about this supposed God of War title were shared at this time, and it isn’t known if it is being developed at Santa Monica Studio or by a third-party developer. There is a chance that it could be officially revealed during the upcoming PlayStation State of Play livestream on June 4, which will feature over 40 minutes of footage and updates from future PlayStation games. If not, then maybe Sony will present it at Summer Game Fest 2025 a few days later on June 6.

This is assuming that the 2.5D Metroidvania title Jeff Grubb and Tom Henderson mentioned is in fact being developed. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the God of War franchise, meaning that the timing couldn’t be better for a new game starring Kratos. A 2.5D Metroidvania game would be something fresh for the series, and could be a fun way to hold fans over for the eventual next full-on 3D follow-up down the road. Meanwhile, there have also been rumors of remasters of the older God of War titles, but nothing has yet been confirmed.
