These individuals have laid waste to entire cities; some have cursed innocents just to please themselves. With the God Of War franchise continuing past the original trilogy, the list grows longer as more sinister plots come into the light. Here are some of the most evil characters in God Of War.

7 Thanatos

Thanatos GoW Cropped
  • Appeared In: God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta

Thanatos serves as the main antagonist of God Of War: The Ghost Of Sparta. In this game, Kratos discovers he has a brother abducted by Ares when they were younger. Thanatos acts as Deimo's jailer, and when Kratos comes to free Deimos, he becomes immediately hostile, targeting Deimos and seeking to cause Kratos pain because of the death of his child.

Thanatos is the Greek God of death, overseeing the harvesting of Souls, predating even Hades himself. During the entire conflict, Thanatos enjoys taunting Kratos about losing the only family he has left, even as Kratos runs him through with his weapons. Thanatos was a genuinely sinister being who saw pleasure in the pain he caused.

6 Ares

Ares in 'God of War'
  • Appeared In: God Of War (2005)

Ares is the linchpin that started the entire story of God of War, being the main antagonist of the original God Of War game. Having sparked a chain of events after abducting Deimos over a prophecy that foretold the end of Olympus, Ares would interfere in Kratos's life again as his savior.

God Of War Ragnarok: 10 Strongest Characters, Ranked

God of War Ragnarok is filled with gods and monsters that can easily fight their way to the top spot of being the strongest character in the game.

Preparing to meet his impending death, Kratos called out to the god of war and pledged his life in exchange for mercy. Ares bound Kratos's life to him in servitude and had him do his dirty work. Ares is single-handedly responsible for the Kratos's family's death and sending Kratos on the warpath to kill every god in the Greek pantheon. Even before the events of God Of War, Ares was the most hated God, even to his father.

5 Heimdall

Attempted To Kill Kratos For His Father

Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok
  • Appeared In: God Of War: Ragnarok

In God Of War: Ragnarok, Heimdall is the god of foresight, knowledge, and surveillance. He serves as an antagonist to Kratos and his son, as a blind follower of Odin and his cause to keep the gods in power. Heimdall has committed countless atrocities not only by Odin's order but also by his own arrogance, believing himself superior to all races that reside in Midgar, just like his father.

Heimdall even sets his sights on Loki, seeking to kill the boy and succeed where his brother failed. Heimdall takes pleasure in his cruelty, unlike most of his brethren, who act with a minimal shred of humanity.

4 Persephone

Sought To End All Of Existence

Persephone and Kratos in 'God of War: Chains of Olympus'
  • Appeared In: God Of War: Chains Of Olympus

Persephone is one of the most sinister beings in God of War, and as the main villain of God Of War: Chains of Olympus, they almost destroyed the entire world. God of War: 5 Biggest Weaknesses Kratos Has

Despite being the titular God of War, Kratos has more weaknesses than that of a normal god.

She sought to do so by allowing Atlas to let go of his burden and using the God of Sleep to prevent the rest of the gods from interfering. While Persephone's ambition to escape her fate was understandable, her goal to end all things along with her own existence is a ruthless endeavor nonetheless.

3 Odin

Schemed To Kill Kratos And His Son

  • Appeared In: God Of War: Ragnarok

Odin is a legendary god among all pantheons as the king of the ravens and the all-father of the gods, only equal to Zeus himself. In God Of War: Ragnarok, Odin slithers along the shadows as Ragnarok looms over the horizon.

In a desperate effort to gain as much power as possible and fend off the prophecy that dooms his rule and his kingdom, Odin proves he's willing to do anything that is necessary to win, including killing Kratos and his son. Odin seems to have no line or limit when it comes to his schemes, as he preaches peace throughout most of the game but manipulates everyone he can by disguising himself as an ally.

2 Cronos

Lead Kratos To Pandora's Box

Cronos in 'God of War III'
  • Appeared In: God Of War 2

Cronos is a pillar of evil inside the Greek pantheon as the father of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, who was overthrown by his offspring after trying to consume them. Having a long history in the God Of War franchise, going through the original trilogy, Cronos helps and tries to destroy Kratos multiple times. In the story of God Of War, Cronos is the last of the Titans, a race of monstrously powerful and huge beings who ruled before the Olympians took control.

Cronos was defeated by Zeus and forced to walk the earth, carrying Pandora's Castle on his back, which held a box filled with chaos and evil in the world. Out of spite, Cronos sought vengeance on his sons and helped Kratos reach the box to kill Ares. After being imprisoned in Tartarus, he turned on Kratos, seething with hate and blaming him for his punishment.

1 Kratos

The Once-Feared Ghost Of Sparta

Helios and Kratos in God of War 3
  • Appeared In: God Of War 3

As the main character of the story, it is highly thought that Kratos is the good guy in God Of War. However, throughout the majority of Kratos's storyline, he is the villain. From his first appearance fighting on the battlefield, offering his life to Ares, the previous god of war, to avoid death, his life takes a drastic turn.

While acting as Ares's henchman, Kratos commits unspeakable atrocities. Kratos' rage and violence only grow in God Of War 2 when he becomes the active god of war. It's only after a lifetime of pain and vengeance that Kratos looks back at his younger self and realizes he was his own worst enemy.
