According to a new rumor, the classic Greek-era God of War games could be coming to modern hardware in time for the franchise’s 20th anniversary. In 2005, Sony’s Santa Monica Studios released God of War on the PlayStation 2, introducing gamers to the bloody tale of the vengeful Spartan warrior Kratos and setting the standard for action games to come. In the decades that followed, the series would continue across a wide range of sequels and consoles, all the way up to 2022’s God of War Ragnarok.

During the PS3 era, Sony would rerelease the older God of War games through remastered collections, giving players a convenient way to experience Kratos’s dark saga of revenge against Ares, Zeus, and the rest of the ancient Greek pantheon. However, only 2010’s God of War 3 was rereleased on the PS4, meaning that there has been no way for gamers who don’t own its predecessor to play the older games aside from having a subscription to PS Plus. Even then, only the console titles are available, with handheld spin-offs like Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta left inaccessible.

This might change soon, at least according to a rumor from Need4Games (as translated by Comicbook). An alleged insider by the handle of “Lunatic Ignus” claimed that multiple God of War remasters are in the works for the PS5 on Discord, including the three mainline entries, the previously mentioned portable spin-offs, and the 2013 prequel God of War: Ascension. These remasters are reportedly being handled by Sony PC port developer Nixxes, and will be announced in March 2025 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the first game’s original release.

The Original God of War Games Might Be Getting Remastered

Of course, this is all just a rumor from an unverified source, so fans hoping to replay the older God of War games shouldn’t get excited just yet. That being said, there has been an increase in PlayStation remasters and rereleases lately, with a remaster of 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn set to launch on the PS5 later this month. Given that most of the classic God of War games aren’t available to play on current systems, it could be argued that a remaster of these titles is needed more than games that could easily be played through the PS5’s backward compatibility.

The God of War series has also seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to 2018’s God of War and God of War Ragnarok, both of which serve as a soft reboot of sorts based on Norse mythology. These acclaimed follow-up games have drawn in a large number of fans who might not have played through the original Greek series, so these rumored God of War remasters could finally allow them to experience Kratos’s violent backstory should they indeed be released next year.
