An artistic God of War fan recently made an impressive statue of the villainous Norse god Baldur. 2018’s God of War shifted the series from its original Greek setting to the Nine Realms of Nordic mythology, and in the process introduced players to a brand-new pantheon of ancient deities to battle. While Kratos and his son Atreus don’t initially seek out conflict with Odin and his Norse gods, events soon place them at war with these legendary figures as Atreus learns of his secret connection to the history of his home and the Gods that rule it.
WARNING: This article has SPOILERS for God of War
The first God to battle Kratos in the two Norse God of War games is Baldur, the son of Odin and Freya who discovers the Ghost of Sparta and his son at the beginning of the 2018 game. Cursed to be invincible at the cost of never feeling any kind of sensation, Baldur seeks a way to end his enchantment - as well as a worthy challenge in battle against Kratos. This leads Baldur to a brutal end at the hands of Kratos and Atreus, and his death would propel much of the drama between the duo and Freya in God of War Ragnarok.
A Reddit user by the screenname of burube recently posted pictures of an impressive Baldur statue to r/GodofWar, one that skillfully captures God of War’s arrogant but tragic God of Light. They 3D-printed and hand-painted this statue themselves, and their attention to detail can be seen in Baldur’s sculpted face and the many runic tattoos that cover his body. Other Reddit users have praised burube’s work, noting how detailed the Baldur statue is and even comparing it positively to officially licensed God of War merchandise.
Baldur may have met his demise in 2018’s God of War, but the story of Kratos might not be over just yet. Santa Monica Studios, the developer behind the God of War series, is reportedly hiring people for a yet-unannounced game, one that is said to be a third-person action title in the vein of the last two God of War entries. This has renewed fan speculation about where the series can go after the end of God of War Ragnarok, with some believing that Kratos could face gods from multiple pantheons like the ones from ancient Egyptian and Celtic lore.
In the meantime, burube’s 3D printed and hand-painted Baldur statue is an impressive tribute to the first antagonist to challenge Kratos in 2018’s God of War, and whose bloody defeat at the hands of the Ghost of Sparta would drive much of the plot of its equally successful sequel. Baldur’s sculpt and paint details are nearly on par with his in-game 3D model, and some of the fans in the comment section of burube’s post have asked if they could buy one for their own personal God of War collections.
God of War is currently available for PC and PlayStation 4.
