The Shinsegumi Crisis arc introduces Ito Komotaro, a Shinsegumi advisor, and revolves around a cursed sword that Hijitaka receives. It comprises only 5 episodes of the anime (101 to 105).

In Kabukicho Four Devas, Pirako Chin, a girl looking for the strongest man in the Kabuki district, is introduced. She is a gangters who wants to make Gintoki rule the Kabuki district. It is also only 5 episodes long (from #210 to #214).

Gintama Series Overview

Gintama is set in an alternate version of the Edo period (1603-1868) in which aliens attacked Japan. While samurai are trying to defend the people, the shogun surrenders and allows the aliens to enter the country. Swords are also banned (this clearly is a parody of Japan establishing diplomatic relations with the US and European countries following the Perry Expedition in 1852-1855).

In this scenario, beloved Gintoki Sakata is a freelancer who ends up joined by Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. Together, they take many oddjobs that often involve criminals. While it is mostly an episodic series, there is a larger plot developing in the background.

It was serialized from 2003 to 2019, compiled into 77 volumes. Studio Sunrise, most known for the Gundam series, adapted the story into animation from 2006 to 2010. The following arcs were adapted by Bandai Namco Pictures, which is also handling the new spin-off animation.

Gintama is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
