Minor spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War: Ragnarok.
Ghost of Yotei is currently one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and as the game's recently announced release date draws closer, the excitement is mounting. Marking a bold departure from its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei jumps 300 years into the future with a brand-new protagonist, Atsu.
This drastic change in direction is fascinating because it opens the door for a full-blown anthology series. However, there is no official confirmation that a third installment is in the cards. If Ghost of Yotei ignites an anthology, there are plenty of exciting narrative possibilities in the future, but if the game follows a current Sony exclusive trend, the upcoming revenge tale may be the latter half of a two-part tale.
Ghost of Yotei’s Time Jump Should Leverage an Assassin’s Creed Shadows Feature
Since Ghost of Yotei seems to feature a time jump into its story, it could increase immersion by letting players experience that time jump firsthand.
Sony's Recent Trend of Two-Chapter Stories Could Put Ghost of Yotei in a Tough Situation
Some of Sony's Biggest Exclusives Have No Third Chapter in Sight
- The Last of Us
- God of War (Norse saga)
- Death Standing
While third chapters like Marvel's Spider-Man 3 and Horizon 3 could also be on this list, such follow-ups are at least believed to be in the early stages of development. When it comes to threequels, The Last of Us and God of War are the most mysterious of all. It's really hard to determine if Death Stranding even warrants a third chapter, since Death Stranding 2 isn't even out yet, but Hideo Kojima recently confessed that he has ideas for another installment.
However, after The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War Ragnarok, the future of these two franchises is being kept under wraps. Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann was recently vocal about the uncertainty about The Last of Us' future, while Santa Monica Studio has yet to give any hints about what lies in store for Kratos and Atreus after the events Ragnarok. The Last of Us Part 2 and Ragnarok were left with incredibly open-ended finales, and if Ghost of Yotei follows suit, fans of the series may need to get ready for a long wait for any potential third chapter.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to release on June 26, 2025.
Ghost of Yotei's Lone Nature May Help Keep Fans Free of Sony's Missing Third Chapter Woes
Since Ghost of Yotei feels destined to be a one-off story, it more than likely means that the game's narrative will be tied up much neater than Ragnarok or The Last of Us Part 2. Granted, there is something beautifully bittersweet about Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 2's uncertain endings, but this route may not work for a one-chapter narrative like Ghost of Yotei.
Naughty Dog's next game is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while Santa Monica Studio is working on a brand-new IP that has yet to be revealed.
The Wait for Ghost of Yotei Won't Be Much Longer
- Ghost of Yotei is set to launch on October 2, 2025.
Now that a release date has finally been confirmed for Ghost of Yotei, the countdown has officially begun. For a while, 2025's fall calendar was looking really bare, but Ghost of Yotei's presence marks an exciting title to look forward to. The lack of third chapters happening with Sony exclusives right now can be frustrating, but it doesn't mean that fresh installments will never happen.
The Last of Us Part 3 and a sequel to Ragnarok are still possibilities, even if the wait continues to be grueling. Until the third chapters of these franchises are announced, there are at least plenty of other games to look forward to this year, and Ghost of Yotei is at the top of that list.
