Sony confirmed that Ghost of Yotei has managed to exceed the sales of its predecessor and helped "significantly" contribute to the company's overall financial results. Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei has enjoyed a lot of success after launching on October 2, 2025. In addition to sterling reviews, Ghost of Yotei was nominated for numerous end of year awards, while clearly managing to be a major seller for Sony as well.

The PlayStation 5 exclusive reportedly had a very strong start as well, with reports indicating that Ghost of Yotei made over $140 million in revenue just 3 days after launch. That would mean that Ghost of Yotei was able to make back its development budget twice over, though at the time, it seemed like the game was tracking just slightly behind its predecessor in terms of sales. As it turns out, it appears the game continued to sell very well, likely why Sony was so thrilled with it, considering that it was the big flagship title for Q4 2025 and represented a massive chunk of its end of year financial results.

Ghost of Yotei creative director Jason Connell revealed one feature that was scaled way back prior to launch, but was ultimately the right decision.

Ghost of Yotei Has Outsold Ghost of Tsushima

Sony's chief financial officer, Lin Tao, recently confirmed that Ghost of Yotei sold 3.3 million units through the first 32 days it went on sale. Better yet, Tao revealed that, "Ghost of Yotei, a tentpole title we released in October, exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time and significantly contributed to the financial results of the quarter." By "same period of time", it's assumed that Tao is referencing Ghost of Tsushima's first 32 days of being on sale as well, though the game would eventually hit 5 million copies sold in just under 4 months.

What makes this even more impressive is that by the time Ghost of Tsushima launched for the PlayStation 4, the console had already been out for 7 years at that point and had a larger base of players than the PlayStation 5 does currently. Not only that, 2020 was also near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a massive boom for the games industry as people were forced to stay home during lockdowns, leading to more games being purchased and played. Ghost of Yotei was able to build on that existing franchise, while also selling for $70 or $10 more from the original base Ghost of Tsushima price point. It's clear that this hot start is likely only the beginning, as it's expected that Ghost of Yotei will follow suit and launch on PC sometime in the near future, perhaps on the game's first anniversary with PC-specific upgrades as well.

Naturally, there have been a lot of comparisons between both games, likely due to the similar settings of Fuedal Japan, even if Yotei takes place over 300 years in the future in an entirely new location and with a completely different protagonist. Sucker Punch even added to the discourse prior to the game's launch in 2025 as Sucker Punch studio head Brian Fleming confirmed that Ghost of Yotei's budget was around $60 million, largely the same as its predecessor. Compared to other AAA style games, the budget is relatively small, which likely helped aid in the game's profitability for both Sucker Punch and Sony.

2026 will likely also be a big year for Ghost of Yotei, with more content set to launch. Sucker Punch has already confirmed the return of the co-op Legends mode for Ghost of Yotei, a popular free add-on making its return from Ghost of Tsushima. Details remain scarce, and Sucker Punch hasn't hinted at a potential launch date, but fans do know that the content will include two-player story missions as well as the classic four-player survival matches. Players can select one of four new classes, build their character, and attempt to defeat massive demonic versions of the Yotei Six, in addition to new enemies as well.
