Summary

  • Ghost of Yotei was built from the ground up for the PS5 to enhance its visuals, featuring vast sightlines and realistic details.
  • Based on the visuals shown, Ghost of Yotei has massive potential to be PS5 Pro-ready at launch or shortly after release.
  • The game is likely to impress visually even without PS5 Pro enhancements.

As noted in the PlayStation Blog post covering it, Ghost of Yotei is Sucker Punch's first game to be built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5 console. What this ultimately allows the developer to do is to make a game that is even more visually captivating than Ghost of Tsushima, which is already an impressive graphical feat and was developed for the PlayStation 4, no less. The PlayStation Blog post goes on to mention that Ghost of Yotei features "massive sightlines" that allow players to see far into the distance without compromising the game's performance, as well as new skies that showcase twinkling stars and vibrant auroras and enhanced movement in the game's vegetation as the wind blows through.

Needless to say, Ghost of Yotei is set up to be a feast for the eyes on the powerful PlayStation 5 console, likely even rivaling Red Dead Redemption 2 in terms of visuals and realism. However, while Ghost of Yotei's reveal certainly showcased its photo-realistic visuals, it simultaneously leaves one major question about the game's future — specifically, whether Ghost of Yotei will offer PlayStation 5 Pro enhanced graphics at launch or simply receive a PlayStation 5 Pro enhancement update shortly after its release.

Ghost of Yotei Likely Has a Future With the PS5 Pro

Ghost of Yotei Could Be PS5 Pro Enhanced at Launch

Given the visuals already shown off in Ghost of Yotei's announcement trailer, it would make sense for the game to be enhanced for the PlayStation 5 Pro at launch. It has, of course, been confirmed that Ghost of Yotei was built specifically for the PlayStation 5, meaning its fate might be sealed to exclusively take advantage of the console's base model. That being said, with the PlayStation 5 Pro launching on November 7, 2024, and Ghost of Yotei currently only having a broad release window of 2025, Sucker Punch and Sony may have enough time to enhance the sequel's visuals to benefit from the PlayStation 5 Pro's upgraded hardware at its launch.

Arguably, games that prioritize their visuals, such as Ghost of Yotei, deserve to be playable on the most powerful hardware available.

Ghost of Yotei Would Be Remiss Not to at Least Receive a PS5 Pro Enhancement Update

If Ghost of Yotei doesn't launch with PlayStation 5 Pro-enhanced visuals, it should at least receive an enhancement upgrade shortly after. Several other PlayStation 5 games that have been out for some time now — including Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, and Ghost of Yotei's predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima — have already been selected to receive PlayStation 5 Pro Enhancement upgrades at some point due to the enticing visuals they currently offer. As such, there's little reason why Ghost of Yotei shouldn't also be considered for a PlayStation 5 Pro upgrade after its release.

Should Ghost of Yotei not launch with built-in PlayStation 5 Pro capabilities, it shouldn't delay an enhancement patch, as it might not benefit from the same degree of attention if it had been released with the ability to take advantage of the console outright.

Whether Ghost of Yotei is PlayStation 5 Pro-ready at launch remains to be seen, but it has at least likely been considered already, especially given the game's graphical prowess — assuming the visuals in the announcement trailer accurately represent the final game. Nevertheless, at the very least, Ghost of Tsushima fans have finally received the long-awaited news of a sequel that was previously only supported by unverified leaks and rumors. Furthermore, even on the base model of the PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yotei will likely be even more impressive than Ghost of Tsushima from a visual standpoint.
