The newly released Ghost of Yotei features a brand-new protagonist in Atsu. Set several hundred years after Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu is on her own quest for revenge, not against an army of invading Mongols, but against the Yotei Six, who are responsible for killing her family.

Given the respect for Japan that Sucker Punch has woven into both Tsushima and Yotei, both games feature fully-voiced English and Japanese dialogue. In terms of Atsu, she is played by Erika Ishii in English and Fairouz Ai in Japanese. While their performances in Ghost of Yotei are excellent, these two actors have added their voices to many other recognizable video game roles.

Erika Ishii

Erika Ishii

As the English voice of Atsu, Erika Ishii takes on one of the biggest roles of their voice acting career. However, they're no newbie. Ishii's star has been steadily rising since 2020, and while Atsu marks the latest notch on their acting belt, there are plenty of recognizable video game roles that bear Ishii's distinctive voice.

Apex Legends is the premier example of free-to-play genre blending. It's an effective and addictive mix of a hero shooter and a battle royale PvP game. In squads of three, players choose their hero and drop into a wide-open map, where they take on other squads of heroes in an effort to be the last trio standing.

Introduced in Season 9, Erika Ishii voices Valkyrie, a Recon Legend armed with a pair of jets that allow her to briefly take flight, and a suite of missiles that can damage or stun enemies. As a character, Valkyrie, aka Kairi Imahara, is a bit of a badass. She's unapologetic, often living on the fringes of the law and taking dangerous, thrill-seeking work of any kind, legal or otherwise. Erika Ishii voices her with an appropriate degree of brash indifference, but the depth of her character emerges when she talks about her family, and in particular, her father.

Erika Ishii was one of two voice actors to lend their talents to playing the female Rook, the hero and playable character of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Rook is a very "modern" protagonist, no matter which actor voices them; they're confident, honorable, and quip-ish, akin to many of the characters popularized in the MCU.

Much has been made of the writing in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Erika Ishii does about as well with the script they were given as any of the other Rook VO actors. It's an up-and-down narrative campaign, but the highs are as good as any Dragon Age fan could hope for. Ishii's portrayals of Rook's chess-match-like conversations with the imprisoned Solas are particular standout moments.

The year 2020 was a big one for Erika Ishii. After a few years doing voice work for indie games and providing "Additional Voices" in triple-A titles, they finally started getting named roles in major releases. One of those roles was Domina Venomblade, a boss in the Plaguefall region of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

Domina doesn't actually have a ton of voice lines, funny enough, and of them are one-liners she yells during combat. Regardless, she was memorable to many players because of the challenge she posed to their progress through Shadowlands. Particularly for players trying to solo the expansion's bosses to unlock a unique mount, Domina often proved to be the toughest challenge on that journey, and the players who struggled with her are likely very familiar with Erika Ishii's voice work after hearing it repeatedly during that fight.

The same year that Erika Ishii appeared in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, they lent their voice to Ana Bray in Destiny 2. Ana is an extremely sarcastic Guardian who lives for adventure. As a Guardian, she lost her memory following her "first death," but she had a sense of her former life because she was wearing a Clovis Bray ID when she awoke, which connected her to House Bray.

This loose thread drives Ana's obsession with discovering her past life, going so far as to fake her own death to do so, and she slowly uncovers a connection between her and the Warmind, Rasputin. Erika Ishii deftly handles all these character elements in their performance. Ana's free-spirited nature is endearing, but it never clashes with her dedication to uncovering her past life and rescuing Rasputin from the Worm God Xol. This is a testament to Erika Ishii's voice work and the humanity they brought to Ana's character.

In Deathloop, players assume the role of Colt Vahn, an assassin who is inadvertently trapped in a time loop while on a secret island called Blackreef. To escape, Colt must kill six targets who are the "anchors" keeping the time loop stable, and he must kill them all in a single, uninterrupted loop. If he dies (and he will), the loop resets, and he has to start all over again.

One of those targets is Wenjie Evans, a gifted physicist who is not only one of the founding members of Blackreef's AEON program but also the architect of the time loop itself. Or, at least, that's what she told everyone. Wenjie is a supremely overconfident scientist who has no fear of tampering with the very fabric of reality. When Colt finds her, she has manipulated the time loop to bring multiple alternate versions of herself into the world, meaning that he actually needs to kill several Wenjies, not just one. Erika Ishii captures Wenjie's haughty self-assuredness with a deft performance, perfectly blending the scientist's sparkling intellect and her complete desperation when everything she's worked for comes crashing down.

Fairouz Ai

Fairouz Ai

For players who choose to experience Ghost of Yotei's campaign with the Japanese voice work instead of the English actors, then Atsu will instead be played by Fairouz Ai. Ai has led an extensive voice acting career, appearing in countless anime and video games, although her career in the virtual medium only began in 2019. However, her most recognizable video game roles are extremely recognizable.

Following Operation Wallclimber in Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, the player character—known only as 621, or by their callsign "Raven"—is exposed to a large blast of Coral energy. This results in 621 making contact with Ayre, a C-Pulse Mutation whose voice 621 can hear in their head throughout the remainder of the game.

The following ten weapons pack a serious punch in Armored Core 6.

Ayre acts as a foil for Walter, 621's handler. While Walter is more aligned with the ideals of the Rubicon Research Institute (where his father worked when he was a child), Ayre's interests are far more focused on the preservation of the planet Rubicon 3. The two voices act as the angel and devil on 621's shoulders, although which one is which depends on who players align with during their playthrough. If players choose to play Armored Core 6 with the Japanese VO, Fairouz Ai will be the voice of Ayre that they hear throughout most of the game. She plays the role with an air of enigmatic mystery, but Ayre's care and concern for Rubicon 3 is unmistakable.

Catherina Grann is, technically, a rival candidate in the central election taking place in Metaphor: ReFantazio. She hails from the paripus tribe, a small but lively group of humans with animal-like traits, such as dog ears and tails. Due to their natural physical abilities, the paripus tribe is often subjugated and looked down upon. Catherina, a paripus bounty hunter, vows to execute the nobles who have oppressed her people by joining the Royal Tournament and facing off against the protagonist.

Despite being a rival candidate, Catherina is also a follower in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Despite their obvious conflict as opponents, Catherina is impressed by the protagonist's selflessness. When players agree to help her unconditionally, even though she is, technically, their enemy, she forms a bond with the protagonist and becomes a follower. Fairouz Ai plays Catherina as both a bit crass (she is a bounty hunter, after all) and as someone who is deeply honorable. She's very relatable, and while her proposed methods may be a bit violent for a potential ruler, her reasons are just, and the targets of her rage are deserving of it. Ai doesn't shy away from Catherina's darker moods, but in the end, she fights for a justice that her people have never seen, and it makes it very hard to dislike her.
